I just bought my first bass boat, and Ray Roberts will be my home lake. I'm wondering about running out of Buck Creek. Is there a defined boat lane that is safe to run from the railroad tracks to the main lake? If so, is it marked in some way?

Once you go under the RR Bridge going out to the main lake sit in between the 2 points where you see the 2 boats in the link below. https://zoom.earth/#33.449477,-96.931198,17z,sat
You will be able to see how they run the old railroad into and out of buck creek. It's not that hard to learn.

Coming from the buck creek ramp headed to the RR tressle there is a widow maker on the right (outside) of the slight left turn before the tressle... looks wide open, that sucker is a beast about 18-24" in diameter and only a foot or so under the water. While plenty of folks run that lane off of directions they received in an email or internet post... I would STRONGLY suggest you get someone to show you, follow someone the first time, or idle from the RR Bridge to the submerged RR tressle a few times before dropping the hammer. The submerged RR tressle itself is super easy, its getting from the ramp to there that can bite you. This, ofcourse, is just my opinion. When in doubt, idle out!

Idle to you learn it. Send me a PM with your personal email and I can send you a google earth map tip on where you need to run, most of the time you can follow someone else's trail as well till you get to know it. The lake is at full pool now, so what you don't see right now is about 2' to 3' below surface. Life Jackets and Kill Switches as my old friend use to say, but make sure and keep your insurance paid up.

You better find someone to go with who knows that part of the lake. Old times who were around when the lake first opened know the layout of the old tracks. When you get to the end of the tracks you can get sick real fast if you do not know what to do. Lake level plays a big part in what to do in that area.

That stump is ugly when the water goes down a little more and you can see it! I think there is even a reflector on a tree very close to the stump that would make you think it is clear to run.
See you on the lake and have a great day!

I would love to know the safest route thru Buck Creek to Indian arm and IBD creek arms of the lake. I have fished Buck Creek with a guide once but it looks a gauntlet to me. I need to just start motoring out slowly and fish close by until I get a feel for where it is safe to motor. The guide I was with was blowing thru the area, but he idled back for a small stretch. I asked him why and about that time i felt the boat lift to the passenger side ever so slightly. He said that was why

Right now is not a good time to learn it, cause the lake is full. Go to Google Earth, then look up historical imagery, then slide the clock back in time, you can go back to the low water level droughts and see some great details of the lake when it's low. Best tool on earth other than physically getting out there in the low levels yourself and running the lake, plus you can see the many humps, road beds, fence lines and points that you normally don't see along with the all the stumps.

This ^^ There is no way you are going to be able to make those runs just looking at Google Earth or having someone show you on a map. Either take it slow and/or have someone show you. Even that won't guarantee you wont hit something the next time.

Even that won't guarantee you wont hit something the next time. I saw a guy hit that widow maker about three years ago. It threw him like a bull from the boat. Fortunately he had on a life jacket and kill switch connected. Looked like the boat body slammed him..and he was senseless for several minutes. He was only running 15 or so too. He turned out ok, but got help from two other boats nearby, which was odd in itself, to have three boats w/in a hundred yards of that spot. If I had a new boat, I'd be taking my sweet time through there. When the lake gets low again, you will understand why you need to 'know' where you can run and where you can't.

There are no boats lanes on Ray Roberts. And honestly, I'd never trust following someone I didn't know that I saw running. Your boat might sit deeper than theirs. The way I found all of my lanes is time on the water. I'm fortunate to fish almost everyday and I still get surprised every once in awhile. If you see me running, it's because I KNOW it's safe. Otherwise, it ain't worth it!
