Good morning folks,

Gonna be making a trip out to Choke Canyon this weekend. I am pretty familiar with the lake however this will be my first time kayak fishing. Was wondering if y'all had any tips on kayak fishing on this lake or just kayak fishing in general. Not sure if I should try to find some grass or underwater structure (or how I would even do that from a kayak) or stick to the shore and heavy brush/timber.

Also was curious if I should change my tackle in any way while kayak fishing. Typically on Choke I stick to spinnerbaits, baby brushhogs, wacky-rigged senkos, and the occasional rattle-trap.

Any help is appreciated!

Well out of all the lakes in Texas, Choke is at the top of the list of lakes I would NOT fish out of a kayak on, just saying!

p.s. Your baits are spot on for Choke, and I would focus on and around the grass and maybe add a fluke to the mix.

Can anyone say "Dinner Bell" for alligators. In years past I have seen a couple of real bruisers, but I haven't been there is several years

Lol!

I've seen people kayak all the way across to Three Fingers, I wouldn't do it; but they did and they made it there pretty quick.

Yup, I have also seen guys fishing neck deep near the South Unit (years ago) during the day, and have been out after dark and have not been able to count the number if eyes in the same area. Not this fat boy!

Biggest gators I've ever seen were laying on weedy bank at Choke. Wouldn't catch me in a yack on that lake, much less wading.

Last time I was there we fished a BASS event. My buddy won and at the time was fishing from that small 16.5-17ft?? Skeeter. He swears that one of those gators surfaced next to him and the gator was larger than his boat.

So basically you are nothing but a large Vixen in that kayak. Just pray the topwater bite is off that day...LOL
