I've been wondering, does anyone know how they remove the old 2 Mile Bridge columns on Lake Tawakoni? From my understanding, they will be removing the entire bridge and I didn't know if they are able to just pull the columns up in one piece using a large crane or what. Just curious.

The one in Granbury,(377 business) was done by demolition. Some of it stayed in the lake if I recall.

I would rather die finding out there was no God than die finding out there is.

Taking the top off and then two big cranes hook onto the columns and the pull it. Load it on a barge and haul it off. At least that's what I saw the other day.

Yup, I graphed it and there nothing where the section is missing....Seems like a lot of expense and a waste of great structure loco

That's what I've heard ever since I heard that they were going to build a new bridge. That they were going to remove all of it. A friend who recently fished Tawakoni told me that he graphed / scanned over the area where the old bridge has already been removed and he said the same thing. That nothing was left. It would have been great if they could have left something on the bottom. The water is deep enough at the bridge that if there was something bridge "remnants" left on the bottom and the lake ever got low enough where those "remnants" would become a hazard, it'd be so low that no boat could be on the water.

I hope that I get a chance to be on the water one day while they are removing some of the columns. I just figured that after almost 60 years that the old bridge has been there, the suction (vacuum) from the mud and lake floor would be tremendous in removing the bridge columns. I wonder if they have to anchor the barge into the lake bottom in order to remove the columns. I'm thinking that if not, the cranes may push the barge lower into the water (maybe even under the surface) if there is a huge vacuum around the columns. Just curious.

Good news is the new bridge is fishing pretty good already...

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

The scrap metal is well worth retrieving right now.

Several ways can be used to break the suction (surface tension)...pressure and vibration are the most common.

When is the completion date set for the bridge. It's one of my favorite fishing spots during the summer when fishing from a small two man boat. The ramp is right by the bridge and you only need a trolling motor to fish it.

When I was on Tawak last I was told the bridge was bought by someone and they are taking the pieces to a concrete plant... don't know if that's true but it would make sense because if it was city or county gubment they wouldn't be so precise with it.
