For safety reasons it needs to be unplugged. If it's a 5-speed, there isn't any electrical reasons why. If it's a Motorguide Tour series with the on/off switch, then should be switched to off. If it doesn't have the on/off switch, should be unplugged for electrical reasons. On the MinnKota variable speed, it should be unplugged for electrical reasons. John
