Looking at getting a 3/4 ton gas or diesel GMC. Those who have these trucks what is the fuel milage you are getting. Empty and with trailer. I have had GMC's for 30 years and planning on staying with them so please don't turn this automotive debate. Thanks in advance.

Here you go. Fuelly vehicles that are tracked over numerous fuel fill ups. The first gives all recent years and the second is all 2014's. When you select an individual truck make sure its a diesel. It will show each owners estimation of how many miles were highway and how many city.

No comparison on the GM side of things. The 6.0 gas is a fuel pig but solid to 200k miles. You just have to decide if you want to pay the premium for diesel motor and its fuel. The Duramax will get the same, likely better than the 6.0. You don't get the new gas motor with cylinder displacement in the HD's.

The gas motors only come in 410 rear gear ratio. Have to go to diesel to get a different ratio. Thanks, guys

You might want to check out the tests on tfltruck.com --- or check their posts on youtube.

So much depends on how you drive and what you want/need to do with the truck.

The 6.0 comes with either 3.73 or 4.10 gears. Uncle uses a 2011 6.0 gas with 3.73's to tow his 34 foot tongue pull TT with 3 slides with no problem. If your easy on the gas pedal you can get somre pretty decent mileage out of a 6.0, but they sound good and if you put your foot in it they will drink a fish.

The dmax will do a little better on fuel empty and towing but it comes at an expense of maintenance, a small jump in fuel cost, def, and its not a lot better mpg's. If you drive the chit out of the diesel its gonna be thirsty too.

My dad's 2005 duramax never did as well as I thought it should. Lucky to get 18 on the highway and it got about 12 towing a small-ish travel trailer. The 6.0 gets 12-14 empty and under 10 towing from what I've heard. Buddy had one in a 1500HD with 4x4 and got about 13 mpg empty.

Basically, they both drink it. I'm a chevy guy too, but if you want a chevy that can tow more than a few thousand pounds, they don't have anything that's fuel-efficient or reasonably priced (much less both).

What are you going to be towing?

31ft travel trailer. I have a 2009 1/2 ton GMC Sierra now. It is light in the front end. The trailer has a equalizer weight distribution hitch. I also put a road master kit on the truck which helps the rear end from sagging. Still seems light. Have done many adjustments to hitch, trailer, and truck.

These newer diesel using DEF and more emission controls don't get the mileage the older ones do.

Your asking about fuel mileage so I assume the budget matters.

How much does your TT weigh? How often and how far will you tow it?

It seems like its well within the wheel house of occasional usage with modern 1/2 tons and a properly set up WD hitch.

I would never pull a trailer that long with a 1/2 ton truck. The trucks just aren't heavy enough to handle a large load and a 31' bumper pull is a large load. Might be ok if it were a gooseneck.
