Fishing with My 8 year old daughter Allyse we managed to catch and release an absolutely massive alligator gar on a remote Texas river. and not only did we catch one we landed another one even larger right after wards. The Alligator Gar is the largest predatory freshwater fish in north america and its species has been on the planet for over 100 million years since the begining of the cretacious period making them a true living dinosaur that has survived the test of time. i know this is one of my longer videos but there isnt that much content on alligator gar and i like telling the whole story.

I'm amazed to see you in the water hugging that monster like it's your grandma. If I hooked that I would probably cut my line. Don't those things eat chihuahuas and small children?

they cant chew, they can only eat things they can swallow. they are also really docile when handled correctly as well as they are very bait specific. its not a raging killing machine. just a misunderstood amazing prehistoric fish that looks a little crazy on the eyes.
i could show you a few videos where people are actually killing them and they are not defending themselves even though they easily could.

its not in their nature to have any natural predators or really anything that could subdue them once they gets passed 4 or 5 feet. when hooked the big gar are more curious and confused than angry and upset about it imo.

check this pic out, this was my favorite pic from the year..you are way more likely to get bit by a shark than a gar if you are being nice to it.

but one good thrashing of those teeth could do some damage. Nice catch. I have always wanted to catch one like that.

Saw one on Lake Belton in 1991. The lake was flooded so fishing up in newly flooded timber was really good. Thought I saw what was a log drifting beside us just under the water, and after a few seconds realized it was an Ali-Gar. That thing had to have been 8 feet plus long and 300 pounds. The guy I was fishing with tried snagging it with a crankbait on 10 lb line.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.
