Hello all
So after fishing the trinity last week I figured it was time to buy that depth finder for my Kayak. not only to locate fish but to also locate depth of the water under me. So after watching a lot of videos my question is- mounting of the transducer. on the side of the kayak vs in the hull of the kayak? I fish out of a 2016 FS12T and I am going to mount the depth finder on the dry hatch door so its close enough to use but far enough as to not get in the way.

So side mount off the rail or inside the hull mount? any advice would be great and thanks in advance

I personally prefer rail, side, rear... mount whatever (no glueing!) -

my reason for doing this - I can change where it is placed - whenever i want & upgrade or change something out w/o leaving messy-ness. I also use my fish-finder on multiple kayaks & a porta-bote - so by having it on a mount I just move it from one to the next.

I use a lowrance 4xDSI - depending on my type of fishing i'll change the position. For crappie I'll mount it off the side up front. When i'm trolling for sandies - I'll mount it off my crate in the back. For nicer models that type of positioning might not be as big of a deal... but i find the option to make those changes nice smile

What kind of FF will you be getting? Just curious. If it's a cheaper unit with sonar only then consider a thru-hull mount. It's definitely easy to DIY

Over the side is easy peasy.

I went with the cheap FF to start out. I bought the Lawrence Hook3. Unknown to me the Ascend has its own rail system and so far I have not found anything that works on it. So with that being said I did mount it in the hull last night and will give it a try this Thursday night at the working man tournament. if it doesn't work then I will have to figure out a DIY for attaching it to the rail. and yes clean up the mess inside my hull... lol!

Random note - you could check to see if these fit? http://www.yakattack.us/by-product-name/feel-free-uni-track-adapters/

Scotty has something similar as well for the wider tracks - several jon boats are mounting tracks like kayakers do and they usually are a slightly wider format.

For thru-the-hull mounts, consider Lexel Caulk. It is clear, and doesn't degrade the signal as much, plus it is softer than silicone and easier to remove and clean up after.

Well after Thursday nights fishing I found out real fast that the hull mount did not work for me. So now I'm working on a rail mount. Little bit of southern engineering since my rail system is not standard but should have it ready for a trip out on Monday morning. Thanks everyone for your help!
