Anyone have any luck trolling crank baits for crappie around N.E. Texas. Have not read much about people doing it much around this area. Was thinking about trying, just wondering if it was worth the money and time in our lakes.

Personally I think there are much easier ways to catch crappie around here. Ive never had any luck with it.

I agree with Brian, I have caught crappie on small cranks, but one hang up and forget about it. Easier to use jigs for sure.

Jigs seem to produce better. I have seen crankbaits produce very well in the spring right after the crappie come off the spawning beds and are actively feeding. I've also caught quite a few crappie at Possum Kingdom right before dusk using chartreuse cranks. Most of the time when this happens I am targeting other species ( Stripers or Sand bass) and the crappie just happen to be there.

Here's an example from Texoma. Got 10 nice crappie along with a limit of stripers in the spring. Jigging likely would not have worked well that day as these fish were chasing shad schools in open water.

I've aways said if someone would take the time to learn it they would do good in tourments here in Texas. I think in the hot summer her big crappie go and suspending in deep open water, If a man Learned it he would have it all to himself. ( I need to be that man )

I will say this. When cooler water temps prevail in shallow ponds, toss the very small lucky strike crank bait on 4 lb line and work it slow. I've caught 30-40 crappies at a time(a lot of under size ones) using this method. The white/silver pattern works best. You can find these tiny crank baits at Walmart. Sometimes the bass will hit these as well.

The PK lake record was broken this year with a Black Crappie weighing 2.11 lbs. Caught on a crank bait.
