I am installing a terrova on a '94 Champion. There is no access panel to bolt it from underneath. I've been told to use the Togglers toggle bolts from Lowes. Problem is I have gone through 4 sets of them already. I can get 3 started but the 4th one always breaks loose and falls in the boat before I can get the bolt threaded. I've tried mounting the frame directly on the mounts then use a spacer to try and get the bolts started before putting any pressure on the plastic but keep getting the same results. Once one breaks loose, you have to remove the other bolts which then make those retainers break off.

I looked at cutting an access panel but there really isn't any place there that has enough room to gain the entry needed. I'm frustrated and at my wits end trying to figure out how to mount this thing. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

You may have to use wellnuts.

The Terrova mount is up at the bow about where the Motorguide name is on this trolling motor. There is one small panel on each side, trolling motor switch on the left and switches on the right. Neither is large enough to get up to the elbow even on an 11 year old. About 2 feet too short to get to the bolt from the inside.

I looked at the isolator bolts which I think are like the wellnuts. I've just read that they don't hold up well and can pop out. With the Terrova, you have to remove the plastic sideplates to check on the bolt tightness and to make adjustments so I just don't trust them and would only use them as a last resort. The Trolling motor is 101# thrust so I am a little concerned about something that holds up to that torque.

I've been thinking about it and I think what is happening is with the Togglers, the screw is spinning the catch and breaking the plastic retainers that are to hold it in place until you get pressure from the bolt. I've thought about putting some adhesive on clip, pulling it tight with the plastic and letting that set up for awhile and maybe that will give me enough bite to get the bolt down snug enough to tighten.

I have used these on another boat with a terrova and even used them on this boat on my last trolling motor and didn't run into this problem. I'm just not really sure why this one is giving me so much of a problem. It isn't even the same hole. Just seems to be the 4th hole whichever one I make the fourth.

It's been 2 days of trying to install this so far with not much progress.

I had to use the quick release thing (not sure if it's exact name) and actually screw the damn thing down from the top. So mine has 2 bolts and 2 big wood screws. I often wonder when I'm going to snag it on something and rip it off; but that's all I could do. Mines on a skeeter and I do have an access hole, but I can't reach that far up.

The mounting system is the biggest complaint I have with my Terrova.

I wish I could have just taken it in and had it installed but after the money to buy the thing, cables, new wiring and everything else, I don't have the extra cash to put in it for someone else to finish it. Two days in the sun working on it and several trips to the hardware store wears you down. I just hope that it runs after I get through all of this. I haven't even been able to test it yet.

If you don't use the sliding plate, which I don't want to buy and don't want to use because of issues I have read about them, you only have 4 holes to work with so I want to make sure that those 4 bolts are strong enough that the unit doesn't end up in the bottom of the lake.

Bobby can you use one of these threw the small holes in the front. to hold the nut or toggle. And i would use metal toggles.

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions. I got it mounted today. Bought some more Togglers. I was using a drill to put the long screws in and that was what was causing the problem. Even moving it very slowly, there was too much torque and it would tear the plastic keepers before the metal could get a bite. I simply used a screw driver very slowly until I had the tension to get the bite and they worked great. Had I spent the extra 10 minutes using the screwdriver to begin with, I would have saved 2 days and about $30 of Togglers.

I would be worried about the toggle chewing through the fiberglass unless you were able to use some kind of backing material and from this thread, it doesn't sound like that is the case.. Good luck.

One would think.

However, I recently had to send mine to the shop for I pilot problems. When we were removing it from the boat, I nearly vomited when I saw the "Professional Dealer Installation". They missed the location once, and slid it forward and punched another set of holes. They had 3 bolts and a lag screw to hold it on. the lag screw pulled out by fingers, and one of the bolts was not tight. The nut needed abut 1/2" from being made up, and was seized to the bolt due to cross threading. This all came rigged out by the dealer, and was in use for 13 months when I found this. One would think that it would have worked loose, but it was actually quite solid when in use. Now, I have four extra worthless holes in my boat for no reason other than an incompetent dealer shop. I would recommend rigging your own boat out if you purchase from this dealer in Waco, kinda on the South and West side of town.

Time will tell. I have used then before after researching and finding that they were commonly used for this. The only other option that I find are the rubber ones but they have their own issues. I think this is something that I will have to make regular maintenance to check for tightness. The toggle is fairly large so it should be distributing the load on the fiberglass pretty well.

I don't see those being a problem as long as they stay tight, they are used all the time for applications like this. I would however back them out a bit and put some blue lock-tite on them and retighten, I would not use red lock-tite as it takes heat to remove.

Yes, of course I put lock-tite on every bolt that I tried putting in. The set that actually worked... I forgot.

Riv-Nuts work very well, but the tool to install them is pricey.
