does anyone have a preference? I had great success this weekend with 65lb braid, but I can see if the bass got pressured they would shut down. Does anyone have preference for line when flipping willow tree islands or buck brush?

50-65lb braid mainline to 17lb Pline CXX leader. 17lb Pline CXX is incredibly strong and abrasion resistant (also much cheaper than fluoro)

You get more bites with Fluoro and if you use braid with a leader then the knot will "catch" the limbs. "Typically" 20 will work but there are times you might need to try and find 25-30. (Like I had to do this past weekend. Broke off 3 times with 20 in the bushes.) One of the better Abrasion Resistant and tougest lines is the Vicious BUT it is not as small diameter as Seguar and it is stiffer. But it is very very tough!

here is another issue I have, 20 takes so much space in the reel. are all the diamters the same for 20lb floro?

Seems like he's really saying the use of braid is appropriate in most situations. He says he uses it to match cover and because he has his XH rod with a slow tip. I know I have watched him skip and flip jigs for hours using something that wasn't braid. He didn't say what type of line he was using, but he did say he was using a heavy/fast rod with a reel that had ceramic bearings and all the brakes off. I guess it shows that guys like Greg now when and where to use what with what.

His braid theory works because of the 1oz jig he's using. Pure reaction strike.

If all you're doing is flipp'n/picth'n willows, buck brush or other heavy stem weeds. I use 50-65# braid. IMO, the bass aren't smart enough to tell the difference between the line and all the limbs & stuff around it.

IMO, the bass aren't smart enough to tell the difference between the line and all the limbs & stuff around it. If the bass get that smart ill have to break down and buy a spinning rod and start drop shotting.

20 pound fluoro is what I use. Seaguar Invizx is my go-to. If you need something a little bigger, the Seaguar Flippin' Fluoro in 25 or 30 lb is almost impossible to break.

i dont like using braid when flipping wood. i think the "sawing" sound the braid makes when rubbing the wood spooks some fish. i always use 20# flouro.

Well while I do like to use braid for flipping, I know use it primarily for punching grass only and now use 25lb Seagaur InvisX.
When you are getting a reaction strike it does not matter braid/mono/fluro. The will either eat it or get off the pot..end of story.
Now I experienced this a lot last year fishing flooded Rayburn and this year as well and this is why I went up to 25 lb Fluorocarbon. When these fish were tight to the cover and you had to pitch your bait way back in there, braid would catch on everything. One little limb and the angle was different, someetimes, alot really, two or three different angles and this catching on limbs slowed the fall of the bait, which gave the fish more time to look at the bait. When I used fluoro, it snagged or caught less and when it did catch it was typically just one limb and because the line is smooth it would slide a lot smoother as if fell. I usually tied after every catch, just habit, but there were times I did not. believe it or not 25lb fluoro does not get the nicks like 15, 17 or 20 does. I mainly made the bump up to 25lb last year, because when Chrisite flips that was what he was using. My partner and I where flipping Rayburn on a tourney and and the ratio was like 7/8 to 1 on fish caught. He was having a lot of issues with the braid catching on everything, while he was having to deal with that issue, I was consistently fishing.
Just my .02 on my observations.
There is a time for braid and there is not a time. Braid can be your best friend, but it can also be your worst enemy as well.

[quote=Brent S]Floro around wood and rock, braid around vegetation. [/quote I agree. Braid is rough and will hang on bark-especially willow bark. Fluoro will slip right through. On the flip side braid cuts veg like a weedeater-only line to use in grass/pads/hyacinth/alligator weed.

skeeterdon, I was noticing the angles on sunday on how my line was falling at ray bob clearly made a difference on if a fish bit or not. your saying that flouro has better angles when it falls?

I got to witness this when James out-fished me at least 4 or 5 to 1 and we were both flipping flooded cover. Pretty cool to see how fast he really is.

give yall an update and backround to my question, last two weeks, have had 3 trips where I was on a flip bite. 20 fish each time along with some bigguns. 65 braid seems to work fine, what im worry about is when the water clears up in my areas and the fish get line shy. Something I am going to experiement with when the time comes, but as of right now. Braid is working great and horse them bigguns in. Im from California and punch hyesin all the time with 65 braid, very similar to how I am fishing but with thick willows and wood.
