I agree

Why? What about that area would prohibit it from having large bass?

Climate seems to fit.

You would just have to take my word for it. The supposed fish was caught in the ocumulgee river. This is a very shallow river that 3lb bass are considered big

I think we ought to leave the dead man and his record bass be. Unless you have positive proof the bass didn't exist or that the length and weight were falsified just let it go. It's been considered without doubt for lo these many years a world record. Guess next we'll start a new debate about Lee Harvey Oswald.

Was it as shallow 84 years ago?

Agree. There is no way it will ever change, so accept it. Someone will have to break it someday. I always pull for George though smile

Yes, it been the same since 1911. Think something like the llano river except muddy. Lots of shoals

Dang, you must be a pretty ol feller if you've been around that river that long.

Not particularly(30) but I am an avid fisherman and like to study the bodies of water near me to give myself all the help I can get. I see the river in its entirety at least twice a week. I will take an aerial picture of the supposed spot next time I fly there during the day.

Well, if you haven't fished or---lived in the record area... you might need to do some research on your own before you question someone that lives there.. I know this gentelman, he has always been above honest and reliable... jm2c's he lived here in Texas for a good while...

Guess all the stories i have read through the the years and pictures I have seen of the "lake" are false than. The ones of Lake Montgomery. An oxbow lake OFF the river. Never claimed to have been caught in the Ocmulgee River but the old oxbow lake created by the river many years before his (reported) catch. Furthermore, pictures of the lake back then show it was much more of "fishy" lake than the silted in mud hole it has become today. "Study bodies of water"? :-)

Actually the bass was reported to be caught in lake Montgomery...an oxbow lake off the main river....big difference. Our Sabine river has some huge bass in the oxbows when you can access them. The record should stand...

You're right man. I actually have no clue what I'm talking about. If you're ever in the area looking for a chance to break the record, let me tag along so I can learn...

OFF the river...

Never doubted he lived there Red, just how he knew what the area was like in 1911. I was raised in Frisco but it looks nothing now like it did when I lived there. Look how much Fork has changed in 20 years.

The Ocmulgee was dammed one time....in 1911 (Jackson lake). I guess you can say it does change. The majority of the land surrounding the river is lowland swamp. The majority of the river is <3'. EVERYTIME it rains, thousands of acres flood with inches of water. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/html/rva.php Check out the Ocmulgee between Abbeville and lumber city and you will maybe have a better idea of "Montgomery lake"
