What a day to try to fish. Wind, lots of rain, and some lightning. Weather played a major role in this tournament with the wind keeping many teams from being to fish some preferred spots. DIV II had 15 teams and DIV I had 16 teams.
Todd Froebe, Clay Gann, and Langdon were first in DIV II with 8.65 lbs. DIV I was lead by Richie James and Tommy Ezell with 9.67 lbs and big fish 1.59. Donny Holder and Charles House managed one fish but it was good for big fish in DIV II at 1.55 lbs.

Prior to the start of all the rain and cloudy weather a week ago, fish were on their normal summer time pattern. Once the sun got up, find a good brush pile or some timber and commence to catch fish. After a week of rain and clouds and water temps dropping about 6 degrees, the pattern changed. Finding fish for some of us (read me and Max) was a real challenge. Fish were caught 8-20 FOW on all colors of jigs and some were using minnows. Fish were holding about 8-12 ft deep on structure most of the time. Some structure a little deeper. Fish were caught from the two mile bridge all the way to the dam. As usual, the key element was dropping your bait in front of a fish.

Here's the results

DIV II

DIV I

Goodness that lake can be brutal in any weather condition. After last years butt whooping the lake put on us we were determined to whoop her this year. I felt like we got the last laugh on the way home but I was wrong as usual. I'm exhausted and hurting. Tawokani still whooped me good. hammer

I missed saying hello Michael. I was in the BassCat next to the Ameracat while it was pouring. I turned around and you had already backed out headed for the trailer. We headed back out about 10 minutes later.

Catching fish wasn't our problem out there, it was catching decent fish. We had 7 fish by 7:05 and we culled .1 oz at a time the rest of the day! The weather, as Ken said, definitely changed the pattern of the decent fish. During pre fishing, every trip produced several 2+ lb fish. I thought it was going to take about 12 lbs or better to win. Any theories on where all the big fish went? I'm just guessing, but I think they may have been roaming in the open water on the big schools of shad out there.

That was our first tournament and dang did we pick a whopper to try our luck! Making our way across the lake as that storm hit was serious PUCKER and PRAYER time for me! 5.5 hours of no fish makes you do desperate things sometimes I guess! All in all we had a great time and look forward to fishing more CAT Tournaments... Top 5 finish in those conditions for our first tournament ain't something we are mad at! Oh and I agree with Tommy, Lady Tawakoni put a whooping on my body, still sore today! Thanks for the experience CAT.

Travis, I was thinking the same thing about the big fish. I said early that morning that we might do better just casting jigs in open water than fishing timber. I think the big fish were scattered under all that bait I was seeing on the SI. Probably been a good time to spider rig and cover a lot of water; but I don't like spider riggin.

I think we missed the key element of "Dropping Bait In-front of Fish!"... blush

We tried channels, bridges, timber in 12ft of water, rock piles on secondary points from 10-20ft of water, minnows, jigs (Black/chart,red/white/blue,elect ckn,orange/brown,pink/purple), jig combos, various jig colors, floating jigs, sinking jigs, you name it.

We couldn't catch a thing. It was our first tournament though, so hopefully will gain some knowledge moving forward to at least get past that GOOSE EGG on the weigh-in board.

Congrat's to the others that caught fish. It was crazy for sure south wind to start and then rain, lightening, thunder, more wind, north wind and finally calm water.

Definitely sounds like a tough day of fishing on Tawakoni. Glad all fishermen are safe and had a good time.
