Have a 1998 Ram 1500, V8, Auto.
Sarted this morning and thought the erxhaust sounded louder, noticed the RPM gauge was showing 3-3.5 RPM's while moving at about 50 MPH, drove for approx 2 miles , stopped, turned the engine off, started the engine and the gauge settled back to 1.5/2, 000 Rpm's, drove it about 7 miles, all ok. ?????????????
Do I have a hidden problem ?
I know, I know, its a Dodge, however at 122.000 miles its been a very good truck.

Sure you didn't have it locked out of overdrive accidentally?
If not, then it sounds like you may have some early signs of transmission trouble. Of course, if you take it to a shop with those miles on it, they will most likely want to rebuild the transmission anyway.
I hesitate to suggest this because of my past experiences with changing fluid and filters in transmissions, but it could be something sticking in the valve body that might be corrected with simple servicing. My experience with doing this has always been on higher mileage transmissions (200k +/-), but usually a rebuild was necessary within 6 months of fluid filter replacement.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!

psycho0819,
Do you mean by servicing, changing the fluid and flushing ? checked the level and it looks maybe 1/4 qrt low, no burnt smell, also if I add, can I mix reg with say the purple ( ATF synthetic trans fluid )?

Yeah, fluid filter change is what I was referring to. I wouldn't mix synthetic with normal fluid, but I'm no expert on the matter either, just speaking from past experiences. Others, more knowledgable than I, might chime in with a different opinion.

No do not mix a standard mineral based ATF with a synthetic. 1qt low shouldn't cause that kind of problem. I would lean more toward the previously stated idea that overdrive was accidentally disengaged. Primarily because of been there done that. My ol 97 F150 was easy for me to hit the button in the end of the column shifter. Saw 3k rpm a few times and realized the off light on the end of the shifter. I have fat fingers hence some of my typing problems. This is one of the reasons I now have owned the last two trucks with a console shifter. OD lockout in a different location not easily locked out. Just add a pint of RoyalP ATF leaving a pint for heat expansion and watch it. Make sure if it does it again to look and see if OD isn't locked out.

Pretty sure RoyalP ATF is synthetic no?
I would add whatever kind of fluid you find that meets the dodge spec. Like others said sounds like you may have just had it out of O/D on accident. Whatever you do I would not flush the transmission, if your decided to service it drop the pan change the filter and refil the pan.
