I'm going to be in Branson, Mo in early Oct and want to do some trout fishing on Taneycomo. Does anyone know of some good places to do some bank fishing. I'v been up there many times but have not fished there.

Right below the dam by the fish hatchery is the best place, all you really need are scuds, sow bugs, San Juan worms, sculpin patterns, and wooly buggers. I'd like to add that a small light sink tip on a dark wooly bugger can be deadly some days when the water isn't running, especially in the area by the boat ramp, did that one year and the sink tip made the difference. Any other time I'm stripping big sculpin patterns for the Browns and bigger bows, or dead drifting scuds(tan, green, and Grey are best) under a red, tan, pink, or orange San Juan worm (or shamois worm). 4-5x fluorocarbon is key up there, VERY clear water. If you're looking for flies for there too shoot me a pm.

Little early for really big fish but if willing to fish in the dark it can be done. Expect salmon run crowds during the light at the outlets and zero crowd at night. Scuds(although I don't know how they find them in the dark) are just as effective in the night. Glow stick and an indicator and your in business. Early in the fall small scuds best bet black olive grey or uv at night. I've caught more than hands and toes full of fish over 20 on the Taney 75% at night. If full moon it's big rainbows if pitch black you are fishing for ten bites and big Browns. Very little help coming from the shops on night fishing though.

Stop by River Run Outfitters - they are good folks and fish Taney daily - they can provide you with current info and access points.

Just find a riffle and shuffle your feet and fish a San Juan worm downstream.
It's cheating but works
Just make sure you get out of the water when the horn sounds.

not only is this unethical, be been told it's illegal, you severely damage scud populations when you do this

Very true on unethical but I think mo one of the few states it's not illegal. The trout parks it is and posted but from what I understand on the Taney it is legal. There was a push to change that but as of two years ago it was legal there. As I don't keep them and don't bait fish or use barbs havnt read the new regs.

I haven't been up there in 5 years so I'm not sure, I was told it was illegal at the time. It's unethical so I don't do it.

No not at all but sadly I am pretty sure Taney is out of luck on protection. Easttexn should be a fantastic trip though. There was a bad problem last fall with low dissolved O2 the fish were ok but sluggish. They do a great job reading it and pump liquid O2 in to the river when needed. I know I second river run but my fav Taney flys are always from Chartered waters fly shop. . I know he has had some family issues last year or so but is still around. I've fished his flys going on 12 years. Very rarely have I ever seen him I call in my flys pay for them and he leaves them in the mail box on the date of my arrival(it's normally late). He has what he calls bit scuds sz20 or 18 in black. And size 16 soft shelled scuds in black and grey are very realistic and durable. He also has an egg pattern unlike any you have ever seen(can't think of the name) It is tied onto the hook like most flys the material points back and is arrow shaped soon as it's wet it fluffs up to a circle. The egg with a scud behind it is deadly. Good luck look forward to seeing the results.

Egg with a scud is good like Robert said, and the San Juan worm in red or tan (pink And orange good in HIGH water) followed by a scud

Thanks all. Looks like I have enough help to last me several days.. I think I am familiar with the spot just below the hatchery, so that's probably where I'l start. I.ve wanted to fish there for a while. Time to try it. Thanks a bunch.

If you can talk your way through the Point Royale gate, down at the bottom of Wimbledon Drive there is a little area with a swing and slide and play ground equipment. There is a path that goes down to the water. That entire area holds some good fish. I've fished there several times and always catch some nice ones there. We usually stay in Point Royale so that is how I get access. I don't know how you could get in unless you sweet talked the gate keeper.

If it ain't yours don't mess with it!
