When you're respooling your reels how much backer line do your normally leave on the spool for bait casters? Most of the common reels hold 120-160 yds of 12 lb test.

For most freshwater reels, I have 75 yards of working line on the reel (whatever pound test that might be) with backing underneath that fills the spool to the proper level. The first time I spool a reel, I put a 75 yard measured length of working line on first, top off with backing, then pull it and turn it around. It's a pain the first time, but after that I'm all set to simply strip down to the backing knot and respool. Notice that 75 yards gets 4 reel spools from a 300 yard filler spool or 8 from a 600 yard spool, with no waste!

Thanks Flippin-Out,I Harare thought about that. I was trying to determine a good amount for working line to allow for the occasional cut off to remove abrasions, etc. without getting to low in the spool before the line had served its useful time. I was also trying to figure as you have stated how I can get 2 fills out of a 150 yd spool.

Thanks

Piggy back question: When do you decide it's time to change or put on new "working" line? After distance has dropped in the cast? When the line is 3/16, 1/4, etc from the spool edge? Or just after a certain amount of reties?

Also do you just put on junk backing or is there a reason for buying one brand over another for say maybe knot strength?

Fill the reel the first time.

Use it.

When it's time to change line strip off what you need to.

Put new line over what's left of the old line.

I probably take this a little to far but I like expensive line with no waste so what I do is for example I have a casting reel that holds 120yds of .012 diameter I take diameter x yards in this case 120x.012=1.44, if I buy seaguar invizx 200 yds and I want to put 100 yds on it that gives me a total of 1.2 leaving .24 for backer if my backer is .016 I take .24 % .016 = 15yds so then I simply walk out 15 yards of backer and then walk out the main line to the desired length. It's kind of a pain but it normally comes out just right.

I use just enough backing line to cover the knot to the spool. Then I put on my main line and fill it up.
