Last Friday, air temp 108 degrees. Lake water level dropping water surface temps as high as 91 degrees. Sunny, not a cloud in the sky. Thermocline at 23 fow. Barometer high, but dropping slowly.
Yesterday, air temp 80 degrees. Lake water level rising water surface temp 84 degrees. No sun hardly at all. Cloudy, rainy, thermocline at 23 fow. Barometer stable (low)
Same amount of fishing pressure both days.

Last week bass were active in 16-21fow (creek channel edges) and also had several topwaters in one fow even in the middle of the day.
Yesterday, zero topwater activity. The bass were active in the same 16-21fow until it started raining quite heavily at 11am. Then they pulled out deeper into the middle of the creek channel and just sat right on top of the thermocline. Some of the smaller bass pulled even deeper onto a really deep flat, again just on top of the thermocline.

I thought there would be lots of active bass shallow yesterday after four days of rising water levels, cooler temps and cloud cover, but it was a barren wasteland shallow. Extreme cloudiness? Florida strain? or maybe really low air pressure?

Same thing happened to me. Thought it would help the good bite I was already on and just got tougher. I think all the cloud cover and weather has them more scattered and suspended.

I went yesterday in the rain and didn't get a,bite. I assumed they'd be active shallow. Didn't even look out deep.

I think the shallow ones just have lockjaw. Sunday I flipped my plastic at the same bush for about 15 minutes, then a 4 lber came up to eat it as I was pulling it out of the water. She didn't act like she really wanted it because she missed and was slow at eating it.

Yes, guess being in the sunfish family, if there's no sun during the day, the day feeders can suspend just hanging out.

They bit on top at Ray Hubbard yesterday...best buzzbait action I've had in years. Didn't hook into any giants, but who cares when they're slamming a buzz all day.

That's awesome, and what I was hoping for with those conditions.
I threw a buzz bait for about 45 minutes total yesterday along with one other topwater--both got bit last week.

Went Tuesday morning at Benbrook, caught one about 3#, then two dinks on consecutive casts up in less then 5 fow, all on buzz baits around the same bushes. Had a couple more hits but didn't hook up. Couldn't buy a bite the rest of the day. Fished plastics and lipless crankbaits in 12-15 fow, nothing. Thought I had a pattern figured out, guess not. It was one heck of a nice day on the lake, temps in the 70's-80-s. Couldn't believe it was August in Texas, felt more like late Sept. early Oct.

Went yesterday to Whitney. Caught 20 on top water. Then the deluge started. We were off the water by 10:00. Absolutely one of the best days I have had in a long time.

When they're sitting on top of that thermocline like that they have lock jaw in a bad way. I've ripped scales off them with 8xd and they still won't bite. I generally beat the bank hard when I see them sitting on that thermo cline in open water

absolutely spot on. I'll go flip a stump in 1 ft of muddy water before I'd waste time on a bass trying to go leviathan on me. Haha. There will be some super tight to cover. Always is.
