Hello guys!! I am new to the forum but not new to catfishing. I grew up in East Texas fishing Caddo, Lake O Pines, Wright Patman, etc. I currently reside in Mesquite and have been fishing the lakes around me (Lavon, Hubbard, Twok). Lately I have been having no luck on the banks anywhere. Went to Wind Point Park on Saturday and only caught 2 small channels. Gizzard shad and cut bream are my bait of choice when fishing for blues (if the turtles don't rob me first). I am wondering if it is just too hot. I do not have a boat to get to deeper, cooler water. I have 4 8ft rods all with 6500 C3 so casting far is not an issue.

Any suggestions on how I can start back to catching good fish. My thought is to wait until it cools down. Any tips would help. My wife is tired of me coming home with nothing other than dinks.

Lake Ray Hubbard parkway off of I30 it wraps around into Chaha which is the street in front of bass pro shops. There are some deeper waters off the edge there if you can cast far enough (which sounds like you can). I caught four smaller channels there Saturday fishing 9pm to 1am. Biggest was about a pound and half. I used some punch bait tho. Had a ton of bites just couldn't land them due to not having enough weight. I plan on trying out there again soon.

Gotta catch em' all.

I was out at John Paul Jones Park about 2 weeks ago and saw a lot of channel cats being caught. All eater size. I was fishing for carp/buff. Caught a few carp. Nothing with size. Seems like the most popular area is over by the boat ramp. Welcome to the forum and let us know how you do.

I don't go to John Paul during the summertime. To many boaters and jet ski and they are rude. Many times they cross your line and tangle you all up in their outboard. It is better out there once school starts and the summer frenzy is over. I have had a little luck at the park off Miller Rd. to the left side of the fishing pier. I will keep you inform and thanks for the welcome.

Also the street before Ray Hubbard park way marina dr. If you head down there to captains cove marina there is an abandoned dock I believe it's K dock. You can bottom fish there and of you work your way up the hill past the boat ramp I was told there is a deep pool over water there you can catch some big blues. This is from a friend of mine who is always down at that marina. Just passing along the info for anyone who wants to try it out.

Yes...it's too hot. With that said, I've been doing ok on channels recently. I look for deep holes and then cast out hopefully just on the tip of the hole. Good luck!!

I fish nights. I use google maps and navitronics (or any good topographical map) to pre-search spots that have deep water channels, old creek beds, and has easy access to shallow water for feeding at night. Wind helps. For night fishing I use heavy rod holders I made from 1 1/2" pvc re-bar and hose clamps about 4' total length. I also use glow bracelets. Go to Wal-Mart and on the Birthday card isle there is a section that has glow sticks. Get a pack of the bracelets. (about $1 for 5) I use them for indicators, clip them up high and make sure to pop them off when you cast or have a fish. Even when you don't see the hit, they swing and make a light tapping sound. I also use the largest cut shad I can find. I personally remove the gut pocket since it washes out fast and leaves useless skin loops. I use a simple carolina rig. 65-80lb main line, 40-50lb leaders about 3-4 feet. number 3 or 1/0 swivel, 4-6oz no roll sinker on the main, then swivel, then leader line, then a 6/0-8/0 circle hook. Always careful to hook bait at an angel to prevent it from twisting around and filling the hook gap. Always check for scales on the hook tip. They bite best at night during the hot months. Let me know if you want pictures of rigs, maps or whatever.

Nice post! What this old man would like is places to bank fish for blue cats without having to hike around alot. I use alot of gear and the older I get the more I look for short distances from the car to the bank. wink lol..

btw...with the (finally) cooling weather is our odds on the banks (for blue catfish) about the same during the day as it is at night now? Thx.

yah, I'm witnessing too many people not sharing information anymore. But.....I don't blame them because some people do not care about regulations or word gets out and and your favorite fishing hole is crowded all the time, etc.

The biggest thing I've learned recently about catfishing from the bank is, to find some deeper holes and place your bait along the edge. When I apply this technique to small or large bodies of water, I seem to always catch fish now. If I understand correctly the fish looking up at the bait along with the scent trail coming down to the fish is the primary reason.

You are... Example. Last time I dropped a hint where I fish the next solid 3 weekS there were at least 300 people lined up on the wrong side of the pond. LMAO!

If the fish don't bite your not baiting right...
