Lifetime Combo since 1998. One of a few good decisions I've made.
The day after catching a lot of fish is still a good day.

There is a running joke on me among my friends. Over the years I am so snake bit when it comes to buying licenses. I ALWAYS get the "old guy at Walmart hired to be a greeter but because the sporting goods counter is so busy with license sales he gets sent back there to help and screws up typing my info so many times I get frustrated after an hour and have to leave before my blood pressure causes my chest to explode" type guy. I go to Academy now during the week mid day. I can't tell you the bad luck have had with license purchases but I'll give you a couple of examples of the many times I've struggled with it.
It was so bad one year I had been out of state working and had vacation scheduled to be home for the dove opener. So I didn't get home until the day before season. Went to Walmart to get my license and stood in line for about an hour. It got to be my turn finally and after the old guy messed up about 5 times and finally got it right the printer was out of license paper. This was the perforated paper with all the tags etc. He attempted to reload the printer and it ate my license when it was trying to print it. No problem, just print another one. BUT NOOOOO, that license showed to have already been printed so it wouldn't give them the option to re-print. After waiting another hour or so I had to leave Walmart without a hard copy of a license that I paid for. I had to call TPWD and pay another $5 for them to email me a receipt that I had a license so I could hunt the next day and then they mailed my paper copy. It was a mess. Sure enough opening day I got checked by the game warden. He was dead set on giving me a ticket and taking my gun. I had to INSIST he listen to me and explain in detail what happened at Walmart. Finally he got on the horn and called in and verified I was licensed. This is only one example of the MANY attempts at a license purchase I have been the victim of getting the old guy over the years which is why I go to Academy now.
Fast forward to last week. I was in Branson Missouri on vacation. No Academy in Branson. I needed a 3 day fishing license and stamps for me and my boys. We wanted to spend the evening fishing so I set out to go get the licenses and stamps. I left them at the condo and told them I'd be right back. It was like 5:15 or so. Plenty of time left in the day to fish. I stopped in a store that said "fishing licenses sold here" in the window. I go to the counter and tell the young man of middle eastern decent I need a 3 day non-resident fishing license, a trout stamp, and a trout stamp for each of my boys. He responded with, "I don't know how to do that. You will have to wait for the owner of the store to help you. He in back. I will get him." So I waited about 10 minutes (Seemed like 30) and here comes the crotchety 50 something fella with an attitude. I say, I need a 3 day non-resident fishing license, a trout stamp, and a trout stamp for each of my boys. He takes a big sigh and says you will have to go somewhere else we are too busy right now. REALLY! I calmly said, the sign says you sell licenses and I need one now. He then tells me "well I'm out of licenses. you will need to go to one of the marinas, or Walmart." I ask him where is the nearest store that sells licenses. He says," you go down here and turn and go down the winding road a ways and its down there". This guy was a 100% jerk. I couldn't believe just how unfriendly and smart Azz he was. I had a handful of things I was going to buy with my license and just laid them on the counter in front of him and walked out pizzed off. So I set off to Lilly's Landing to go buy a license. I arrive at Lilly's Landing at 6:10 pm. The store closed at 6:00. So now I am off to Walmart. Here we go again. I swear I'm telling the truth. I arrive at the sporting goods counter and there is the old man I described above trying to figure out the license system for the very patient man in front of me in line. The customer was so nice and patient with him. But the poor old man behind the counter knew nothing about computers or the license system and couldn't type. We stood there 45 minutes until finally old man #2 came to the rescue to relieve old man #1 behind the counter. Finally it was my turn. Old man #2 got my license done in a record 33 minutes and I walked out of Walmart with my 3 day non-resident license and 3 trout stamps for me and my boys. I left the condo 2-1/2 hours before then and told my family I would be right back that I was going up to the store to get our licenses. When I returned It was almost dark and too late to go fishing. My boys were mad at me because they were all excited to go trout fishing and had been waiting so long ready to go. To make matters worse, I had to re-live the last 2-1/2 hours to explain to them what had happened and why it took so long. They ended up playing video games and I sat on the back porch and sucked down 3-4 beers while I texted my hunting buddies the story of what just happened and took the ribbing that ensued. Its a running joke every year it seems. The adventures of me and my license purchases.
disclaimer: I love old men but will never ever ever ever let one help me at the Walmart license counter EVER again!

Anchorman: You should have just run down to Bass Pro at Branson Landing where they know what they are doing... would have had time to grab a beer or two and/or dinner at one of the restaurants that overlook Tanneycomo in the 2.5 hours you got the run-around! Can also buy the non-resident license online through MDC which is what I did this year when we went. Hope the rest of trip went well, it's beautiful up there!

Picked my license up at Academy in Denton yesterday. While not as excited as Opening Day of Dove season, picking up my new Super Combo is always a special day in itself.
