Caught 6 gar all together today on the motherland of alligator gar fishing, caught two over 5 foot from my Malibu Mini-X kayak and had a few chances at some bigger gar. been fishing allot actually but haven't been getting videos up and thats needs to change. been in a small funk on the 7 foot gar lately, but have been putting in tons of time so I'm sure i will get back into them soon this gar was around 75# and was pretty strong had my drag too tight and it was a little intense for a second. she was released healthy like all the gar i catch are to promote the future of the species. had another 5 footer running when i released her and landed that one as well this is the 4th gar over 5 foot i have landed from the kayak this week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A97zRwMbvTI

Great video! I'm a bass guy myself and I have no idea how you guys have the cajones to pick those gar up and cradle them like that. Especially in a kayak where you can't get up and run to the other end of the boat! If I hooked one of those I might just cut the line since I'm too chicken to deal with all those teeth.

they are honestly pretty cuddly if you are not actually hurting them. they don't really have natural predators at thats size. their temperament is usually pretty calm if you fight them till they are good and tired. i touch them all over their heads and faces and have put my hand on the sides of a 7 1/2 foot gars mouth just so i could feel its teeth. another thing i find interesting is you could put a 6 footer on the bank and after a few minutes it will waddle back to the water. they don't seem to upset by getting removed from he water they just kinda bide their time till they can back in without anyone noticing.
i think if it was researched studies would find they are highly intelligent. more so that just about any other fish in freshwater in the states. i have heard people say they are a dumb fish but my time on the water says the exact opposite to me. they are highly bait selective at times 7 footers will swim right over baits they want to eat for 8 hours before they eat. i have had big ones surface 5 feet from me when i was being silent for hours just so they can get a good look above the water at me.
