I feel like the hardest thing for me to do when fishing is slowing down or just holding my jig still for while, I hear people talking about having to hold it still to get bit. Im just curious how many of you guys fish this way or how many don't fish this way at all. if so when do determine that its time to slow down and what do you consider enough time to hold it dead still? Thanks for your input in advance.

This time of year I catch most of my fish on the pitch and swing or the fall. In the winter, you have to sit there and hold it still or no bites, spring, sometimes you hold it still, sometimes you move it.

I would rather die finding out there was no God than die finding out there is.

I'll generally start out with the pitch and swing but if I'm not getting results then I will dead stick for a few minutes and then give it the slightest movement. The crappie will tell you which they prefer. The last few weeks I've had my best results while dead sticking. You have to confident that you're sitting on top of crappie. About 10 minutes without a bite and I'm moving.
To whom much is given, much is required.

From my experience, two main things determine what I may do first. That's 1) water temp; 2) type of structure. Water temp below 55 degrees and above 88 degrees, I'll be slowing way down with presentation. Spring and fall, more movement. This is only a general rule.
Fishing BPs or timber, I usually do a few things differently. Presentation will vary with BPs. Usaully vertical presentation at first, depending on depth of BP, then pitch and swing.
Timber will be vertical varying the depth till I find where they're located. Usually dead stick for a few seconds, then a small twitch or two, may move side ways or move away from the tree. I try lots of things on timber, but exploring around the tree for limbs at depth by moving the jig usually produces the most bites.
What works Monday may not be the best presentation come Tuesday.

Try every method every day and every hour of every day. Some times the fish change on the same structure your fishing by the minute. Example yesterday morning my customers fished a brush pile and the fish were biting all up and down the water column and only on minnows, but all small fish. We went and fished some timber and as the day went on the bite switched from minnows to jigs on the timber. Went back to a brush pile and you couldn't get a jig down to the brush without a keeper crappie grabbing it. They were hitting it on the fall. Didn't matter if vertical dropped or pitched. That bite lasted 30 minutes and then it stopped. Then they would only hit deadsticked jigs just over the brush. Let the fish tell you what works best for the time and situation your fishing. Your ability to be versatile and experiment with presentations can make the difference between a couple of fish in the cooler and a cooler full of fish.
