Gonna try and put bass gear down some this weekend and try to catch some crappie. Gonna try dock shooting for first time. Practiced in garage and seem to have it down in there anyways. Can I do this with pretty much any spinning rod or does length and rod action come into play? I'm all bass geared up except a few cheap stuff for wife and kids and don't wanna be changing line out. Like to have one designated "crappie rod" to just leave in boat for times I might do it.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to dock shooting rods,It comes down to a matter of preference. You have to do your own experimenting with rods when it comes to dock shooting. Some like a longer rod and some like a shorter rod. What feels right for one angler might not feel so right for another.Expert :// ex is a has been and pert is a drip under pressure 2cents

I like a 5 ft. or 5 1/2 ft. rod. Any shorter and I sometimes won't get the distance I need....any longer and I've been known to hit the dock and bust a few rod tips. Like mentioned above, it's just preference and what suits you best. I do recommend a light line...I use 6 lb. Remember, you're only shooting a 1/16 oz. or less jig and a heavy line would be like dragging an anchor. Docks have been slow for me these last several weeks but if you happen across one holding fish you may get hooked on it. Good Luck thumb

5 ft rod is good, One guide who gave a presentation at CAT mtg back in June said he uses an 8 ft rod, which raised some eyebrows, then he demonstrated how it works. Looks like he, anyway knows his stuff, lol. Most of us mere mortals will go with a rod 4.5-6 ft, no bigger, and do just fine once we figure out the nuances of dock shooting. It's a deadly way to get to some barn door crappie, no doubt about that.

Well I went out and tried. I had a blast. I got it down pretty quick and was able to shoot pretty far and pretty accurate. I boated 15-20 but prob only 3 or 4 would have kept. Missed several tho. I definitely need faster gear ratio. I put Mr Crappie yellow 6lb and most of bites was seeing the line pop or stop. Wind was pretty brutal or I think I would have done better. Really got into them around 7pm. I'll definitely upgrade rod for it. Used wifes Shakespeare 6' from Walmart lol. It worked great. Thanks for everyone's input.

Haha, tried to warn ya...you're hooked now. roflmao Sounds like you caught on quick...line watching. Crappie aren't that different from bass in that they will hang out close to deeper water. I always look for the docks that are deeper then the rest. Welcome to crappie fishin! fish

Yep lol. Did manage to kinda put pattern together on types of docks and depths that produced. Not much structure on lake but man made stuff. So I feel when you get into them you really get into them.

I`m not sure but I think Wally Marshall aka Mr. Crappie uses a rod over 6' to dock shoot from his boat and he drags em out from under there kickin.
