I frequently fish late afternoon/early evening. This means a run back home to get here before dark. It is five miles from the mouth f the river back to the house. This results in my pushing the little Yamaha harder than I would like. I run home in the 4500 rpm range. WOT is in the 5200 range.
Any idea how much I reduce the life of the engine by running it pretty hard. (Moving closer is not an option.)
It's a 4 stroke Yamaha 90.

Being a 4 stroke, running 4500rpms will not hurt the motors life and all you are doing is saving some fuel vs running 5000rpms.

I'm curious of the same thing with my etec 90. The top RPM on it is 5600 and my normal cruising range is 4600-5000. My mechanic says it's made to run at that high speed, but I'm a little uncomfortable running it that hard.

Outboards are designed to be run wfo. It's not hurting it a bit.

My experience watching a few hundred motors come through on trades and service? The ones that got run hard live a lot longer than the ones that were babied. Good intentions=Bad results.

I agree with the others. That's what it is designed to do. With that kind of run you will probably get more life out of it.

Totally agree, take mine up to max rpm often....6000 rpm.....36 years all original except for 1 power pack and regular maintenance stuff, still running good. Not taking it to WOT occasionally promotes carbon buildup especially in ring grooves which is no bueno.

You guys need to take into account the difference between a 2 and 4 strokes.

True, I would not run a 4 stroke WOT as much as I do a 2 stroke but I would still occasionally take it to 5000 and not constantly run it at the same rpm. I've seen more 4 strokes with carbon seized rings than 2 strokes and usually those are babied and run at lower rpm all the time and never get the carbon blown out of them.

Ran our old 1985 evinrude full throttle regularly. It was 30 years old with God knows how many hours on it. It was from back in the days when boats and motors were much simpler, it didn't have a temp gauge, tach, hour meter, or speedometer. It had good compression and would still start on the first crank every morning if you primed and choked it.
New motor is a 150 Suzuki four stroke. Its only a short ways out of break in. Its never been over 4500 rpm and only that high a handful of times.
