This has probably been beat to death on here, but would be nice to settle once and for all.
The comment about his scout letting him down. What exactly is legal at this level for information gathering. What's the timing involved. Have always heard the stories that KVD and other anglers meet with the local 'pro team' members, (Nitro, strike king, etc.) before the tournament and they forward waypoints, current patterns, lure colors, etc. to the angler. Comment on that? If so, the angler with the best 'scout team' really does have an advantage.

Just seems strange that, taking Falcon for example, anglers that have never fished the lake can come from all over the country and in the limited time allocated, can reduce 80,000 acres to one small ridge that they fight over, over travel 60 miles upstream from a river system launch to one brushpile or cove.

Seems like if that was the case the same guys would win all the time. Local info is also a big advantage but my dealings with that is it used to be against the rules, not sure now. I was fishing Richland Chambers once and saw Ken Cook prefishing for either a BASS or FLW event. As I idled by him I told him about a spot and pattern in the back of the cove we were both in. He said " please sir, do NOT say anymore, it's against the rules". I apologized and moved away. I'm not sure where the rules start and stop regarding sharing information and how strictly it is enforced but any help they can get regarding patterns and locations could no doubt give someone like KVD a big edge. Personally, I think KVD is too honest and has too much pride to take a chance on gaining an illegal advantage. He no doubt didn't get any inside info at Potomac since he zero'd the first day.

Seasonal patterns don't change. They get information months in advance. They are good enough to "figure out" the fish once put in a general good area.

I don't know about any scout team, but...
- The pros definitely form alliances and share info among small groups, always have.
- They accumulate knowledge over time, and when you fish 200+ days a year, and so do all of your friends, it accumulates fast. There are not a lot of secrets left at that level. And if these guys get just a sniff of what's going on with the fish, they have the experience to build on the info and quickly put a pattern together.
- Figure in GPS and Mapping at today's level, and it's simple to research a lake in detail even from your house, and that info accumulates every time they fish at a given lake also.
- Internet information sharing, programs like BassGold, there just aren't many secrets left.

The reason they narrow lakes down to these little spots? If a tourney, even small local ones, have been won on a spot....these guys know about it. Bass fishing at that level is a small community really.

Having said all of that, the winners are usually the ones who can fine-tune the current pattern down to something a little different, or even a lot of times, the guys who find their own totally unique pattern. With the amount of knowledge available, a lot of times finding something unique is the only way to sustain your fish over a 4 day tourney!!

Van Dam has been doing this at this level for 20 years, and he has won on the Potomac before. I don't know what happened to him this go-round, but that is fishing. I always look at the bottom of the scores on the BASS tourneys, it makes me feel better to see the whose-who list of pros that show up there from time to time, we're all human.

Scout Team comment was a joke directed at those that think he has multiple people going around and scouting for him.

Also there is such a thing as bad information.

Type this in your search engine:
"A Day With KVD - BASS Elite Series, Potomac River"

This is a thread on another forum, I would've linked it but not sure if that is allowed here.
Very nice/detailed write-up by a guy who marshalled in KVD's boat yesterday!

Thanks for the link, I read and enjoyed every line of it. All it did was increase my admiration and respect for "the" man. He truly is a man for the seasons.

Good read. Great insight to how the man handles adversity.

I enjoyed my experience as a marshall on Toledo this year.
