If you had to buy a trailer for your pontoon boat - who would you consider? Considering that I might be pulling it on a eleven hour journey (700 miles) would you want a single axle or a double?

Is there any one brand/manufacturer that is singled out as an industry leader?

Any to avoid?

Thanks in advance! flehan

Why would anybody buy a single axle? You want to be able to stop? Dual axles dual brakes. You want to keep going or stop when you lose a tire? Dual axles roll on to destination and you change it there. Dual axles all the way.

20 ft. boats with long halls; definitely go with a dual axle trailer.
- If you are on the middle of the fence here; then have a custom 4" channel beam trailer built with the 4k lb. axle. The best tires with heavy duty rating for a single axle trailer.
- We pull to Mexico and every breakdown has been on a single axle trailer because they are not built right. Have one custom made and it will be OK.
- Always build with channel; no tube trailer.

Not sure about brand. But definitely a tandem axle. When I bought my Voyager it came with a single axle with 13" wheels. Its a big boat and squatted the tires. Made me nervous. I put the boat in a slip temporarily and took the trailer to a local trailer shop. This is a place that sells all kinds of utility trailers. They ordered a tandem axle kit and installed it all under $1000. It came with new 15" wheels and tires, bearing buddies, springs, axles, hubs, the works. They did a very good job but will not recommend them for other reasons (owner is a prick). Its sits pretty high but I can pull it with confidence and not worry. Well worth the $1000 to me.

Really appreciate the input here from all of you! flehan

OK - tandem axle it is!

Galvanized, or painted? Probably only use it once a year in saltwater - Destin, FL.

Donald Harper: You refer to channel. Can you elaborate for me? My knowledge is limited in this area.

Thanks.

Do you still have your Voyager? This is what I have as well. Any issues that you care to share? Suggestions?

C-channel instead of rectangular tubing, tandem axle.

I once got a flat tire while I was on a busy 4 lane highway and I blew a tire. Because I had a tandem trailer, I didn't have to pull over immediately (2 lanes over from the shoulder) and endanger anyone else on the road cutting over. I had plenty of control and made the move over slowly and went as far as needed to stop without a problem.

For that alone, I say get a tandem axle.

Yes I still have it. It's a 2009 Voyager Super Fish with a 115 Honda 4 stroke. I love it. I bought it in 2013 from the original owner. Low hours and taken care of. So far no problems at all. Good strong boat.

Thanks. So far - only had it a month - we love it too. Our motor is a little small (50 hp Honda 4 stroke), but we get there, and love how it fishes!

I'm really getting an education here, and appreciate your inputs.

I understand that DFW has a boat trailer manufacturers right here in our back yard - Roadmaster Industries, Inc. Anybody got any concerns about their boat trailers?

Galvanized trailer will last forever. Costs more than painted. Look at the painted trailers. They get ugly fast. Look at an old galvanized trailer. Still the same ugly as when it was new.
