I've had 5 knee surgeries and need a replacement, there won't be any running in my future.

I just looked at the Vivoactive, it's a few steps above the Fitbit Blaze I have now. I just don't have the option for a chest hr monitor, or any of the other speed sensors. I really haven't looked too much at any, but might start now. And with Winter coming, kind of been throwing the idea of getting a trainer too, that'd make it a little easier.

I have a cateye now, it's not terrible, especially if you're just wanting to know you speed, or pace yourself. But on a big ride like that, I think it might benefit yourself to be able to see where you're at physically, not just going by how you feel. Saying all that, I think I did just fine without one. lol.


Just thought about this, but riding along with some of those aero carbon tri-bikes, those things are down right loud! It'd drive me up the wall, I don't know if it's because their totally carbon fiber and when they flex it makes more sounds but there were some you'd hear coming up behind you and it sounded like you were getting passed by a car!

I have the last generation of the VA, the current, or most recent has the HR built in on the underside of the watch face, not sure if you can connect to a chest strap or not.

Aero bikes do have that clicking sound....I wondered the same too. I like my bike quiet.

Vivoactive HR only does pools(you select pool length), no open water swim GPS on it. In case you are prepping for Open water Tri.

I have been carrying a external battery charger with me on the long ride in case my phone needed charging. I made it last 4-5 hours on my ride....and it still had juice. Never needed the external charger.

That's true about the vivo, since I don't plan on any open water swims it was a non-factor for me. It does allow you to use it indoors with a treadmill or spin bike and not connect to GPS. If there was a swim/bike option for duathlons I might consider that, but until then I'll stick with cycling and pool swimming with a little bit of long distance walking thrown in. I do plan on walking some 5ks and 10ks in the future. I usually walk 5-6 miles when I walk so I definitely think I can handle a 10k in a little over an hour.

I've got a birthday coming up and i keep dropping subtle hints to my wife that I really want a Garmin Forerunner 230 with the chest strap HR monitor.

If she gets me that, I can get the Speed and cadence sensors for my rides.

I'm already kicking around the idea of upgrading bikes to one with carbon forks and shimano 105 gear set. Kinda wishing I had spent more money up front on my first bike and got something nicer than an entry level bike. I was hesitant though cause I wasn't completely sure I would ride a lot, but now I love it.

I picked up a 105 crankset at the HHH for $40, plus another $5 for the bottom bracket. That'll be replacing my oval crankset that came on it and give me a complete 105 gear set!!
