I'm new to this and keep seeing it mentioned. I know what's Mepps is, but not sure exactly how it's rigged or if it's rigged with anything else. Thanks very much.

It's simple. Tie on a #2, #3, or #4 Mepps and cast out to the area where the fish are holding. Let the bait free spool down to the bottom. Make 4 or 5 cranks on the reel. If you don't get bit, free spool back to the bottom and repeat until you're back to the boat. Keeping the Mepps near the bottom is key. You change size and retrieve speed until you find what they want. I add a split shot above the lure about 12" to allow it to fall quicker. You can tie a fly about 12" above the Mepps for doubles. His YouTube video will help you. But it's really si.please and extremely effective.

Sometimes I really wonder what inspires people to post stupid stuff like this! The man asked a simple question. I believe that is the whole purpose of this forum. Not sure why people feel the need to be a prick. No wonder this forum has half the posts it once did.

You might consider putting a barrel swivel 15 to 18 inches above the Mepps with a flourocarbon leader to the lure. It helps prevent twists in the main line after 100's of retrieves. The little details can make a big difference. Mepps technique works well on Lake Belton. Its not just about the Mepps. It is mostly about finding schooled fish holding on structure. If the fish are chasing or moving the technique does not work as well. Fishing midday is the best time to try it. Good luck and happy fish searching.

Frank, the Mepps #4 setup is simple - just tie the Mepps (plain, not dressed works better) directly to the line. I've found 10 or 12 lb fluorocarbon line works best. I've never had to add swivels. The #2 and 3 setup is a little different. Because these are too light for a casting rod, which I use, I add a 3/16 oz mash-on (the dog ears on each end kind) weight about 16 inches up the line. This not only makes it easier to cast, but helps it get to the bottom faster. With the #2 I jerk start the retrieval for better results. Also, this arrangement does not work well cranking straight up from under the boat because the weight and spinner get tangled. So, I cast it out away from the boat. For a #4 a smooth start with rod pointing toward line works best. Because fish strike the Mepps while you are reeling, a very smooth reeling casting reel works best. Also, a shorter rod keeps the rod from shaking as much. I use a 5 ft 6 in medium action rod. Good luck! Dennis
