I've never thrown a drop shot a day in my life, but am thinking about picking it up. How many of you use this rig and what are your thoughts on it?

A drop shot is a vital part of my arsenal. It shines best when the days are tough. you can pretty much throw any sort of bait on a drop shot too. I've thrown craws on there during the spawn when I was bed fishing. I've thrown lizards on a drop shot rig too. A drop shot rig is very versatile and will work in any sort of condition.

it's all I threw last winter on the warmer days. I usually strike out from the first hard freeze till about march but on the drop shot I did pretty well. It's a lot of fun and like others have said you can use just about anything on it. a fluke,a worm, grub whatever. I used 4 inch worms and had a blast. Aaron Martens has some good videos on the subject.

It's a great way to rig a plastic. Something I do also with a drop shot is instead of just using a dead weight on the end of the line, I'll rig up a shaky head or T-rig a worm. That way I'm offering two different baits at two different depths. The bass will generally hit the top bait about three times as often as the bottom bait. Works good!

Play with it when you know the fish are schooling. That way you'll know what to feel for...

Monti is a good lake to get some unders on DS right now.

I've been doing a lot of work with this, and what I learned is all about line size....

I've finally settled on mono backing, 10# sunline SX-1 braid with a 6lb flouro leader just long enough to where the knot won't go past the first guide on my rod (the guide closest to my reel, not the end of the rod).

I've been working hard to add this to my arsenal for sure.

Plasma.. I would agree with you about line size.. but a lot depends on the water clarity. Gin clear water, I think you have it nailed. I moved to Texas from Ga.. where gin clear water is the norm and if you got above 8lb floro you just didn't get bit. Since I moved to Texas, I have switched to braid and floro leader.. I use 30lb Stren Supersonic braid and 12lb Invivix leader at Joe Pool. Its been so stirred up that unless you are right by the dam its pretty stained. I really prefer drop shotting to any other plastic presentation..

I use it about 95% of the time. So I'd say its my goto method.

I use it way more often than I would like to admit.
