There is a giant Blue Herron that hangs out where I clean my fish. He has been returning to the same cleaning station every year but 1 for the last 19 years. Crazy right? It's amazing these birds could live that long. This year he showed up with a fishing rig tangled around one leg. He flys right in as soon as I start cleaning fish..He won't let anyone get close enough to net him but he will let me get within 10 ft if I have a catfish carcass in hand. He will catch the carcasses you throw him. You guys know anyone who could catch my pet bird and help get the mono off the old fellers leg?

Hmmm sounds tricky .snare sounds good then . Set one to zip around one of his legs . Guess you could use carcass as bait .

If I had a net gun I think he might let me get close enough...he sees someone strange and he's gone..uniformed game warden and the birds gone...I'm telling you the bird is smart. Might be able to snare him though or put a Mickey in his carcass and wait for him to fall asleep. Lol

If he's that spooky just think how he'll react to being caught. He'll probably never show up again but removing the rig would probably be in his best interest. Also, if you snare him be very careful approaching him because if he's anything like a sandhill he'll be shooting that big beak right at your face. I've seen a dog lose his eye.

. I would definitely throw a blanket over him..he is massive and could easily pluck out your eyes

Don't try it yourself without experience. It will slice you up with its beak. Plus you'll stress it out bit time if you're not efficient and cause it to have a seizure and die. Call TPWD and ask if they want to handle it or who you should contact.
