No kidding..
I was fishing last night for blue gill or reds, whatever will eat a worm. I worked some deep water, nothing biting, so I trolled near the bank.
Made a long cast with a drop shot worm, and immediately picked up a small sunfish, cool.
As I'm reeling him back all of a sudden my 4 lb line got REAL heavy... i thought oh boy this must be bigger than I thought... then I realized there's no way this is a sunfish, catfish maybe?
I was super gentle, a minute or two of letting drag out and catching back up... as the fish began to surface, he jumped, "Oh boy, a bass!" but I knew he'd throw or straiten my #10 cricket hook... he jump and tossed the hook right at the pond boat.... and out of his mouth popped a palm size red breast, still firmly attached to my hook.
crazy.

One of the biggest bass I've ever caught was while fishing for bluegill a few years ago. Reeling in a bluegill and once I got it to the surface this beast comes up and inhales it and a 5 minute battle ensued. It was a ton of fun on ultralight gear.

me thinks these tiny fish would make great bass bait .... Maybe I should start rigging them to a strong pole and tossing them back out

I like to take my kids fishing for bluegill during the day, then I take them as bait at night. Caught many nice bass and catfish at night using gills.

Is it legal to use bluegills for bait? Not criticizing, genuinely asking. I remember reading that guy in Japan who tied the world record routinely uses them as bait.

I have had that happen twice this year. Caught a 4 pound bass in April that hit a Redbreast.

that's just crazy.... especially with such a small hook, you must have to be very gentle in landing that bass yes?
I'm seriously starting to give some consideration to rehooking these small sunfish on a larger hook and sending them back out.

I have caught over a hundred bass on nice sized sunfish under a cork over moss banks, near brush or around pads or hydrilla.
For big bass i like to dfift with a perch hooked up through a nostril.
A few years ago my cousin landed a 10 lb bass on Nac that swallowed his keeper crappie.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.
