I'm looking to captain a boat for a couple of local high schoolers and I'm wandering what I have to do or join, also what all do the students have to do to be able to compete.

Texas high school bass association has a website with all the info for captains and kids. Read the rules, know the rules and follow the rules. They don't bs around and it would suck if your team got a dq for a simple rule violation. Unfortunately, it happens every year.

They should have a coordinator/sponsor at their school who can help you. I know that when I fill in as a captain I have to submit my insurance info along with other info so they can do a background check, this all went through one of the parents or the school sponsor. Well worth the time on the water, if they are good kids!

Mr Mosby, what school are you going to be helping out with? They should have a team advisor that can help out. There is a background check that is required by all Captains(most schools require it for any volunteers and will have a form to fill out) There is also a waiver that is required by us the THSBA, which can all be found on our website. Like stated, make sure you have all the required safety equipment we have listed, the one that is over looked the most is a working Fire Extinguisher. We work our best to insure the safety of the kids and everyone involved. As far as the event, you may do everything for the kids, except cast and reel in a fish for them. The THSBA also has a boat captain side pot, you may posses 1 fish to weigh in for your big fish side pot. You cannot contribute to the student creel. Enjoy the time on the water, it is a blast.
Thank you for volunteering your time sir.
