Hi folks - I am trying to understand what bass tracker John Hope meant by the term "funnels".

I understand what they (and multi-directional structures) are but here is my question. Do you fish in the funnels themselves? Or is the importance of the funnel the fact that it serves as a highway for the fish to get to the structure?

If someone could answer this for me I would really appreciate it.

There was a really great, long thread on this exact topic within the last few months. If anyone can find it and share the link I think it would have all the answers and discussion you are seeking.

I haven't read the book. This is what I call a Funnel.
- It is the highway that bass use to head toward their feeding grounds.
- It is the path they follow.
- It is a contour that will lead them to this area.
- The best funnel is a point with heavy cover that leads out to deep water.
- The steepest drop on this funnel is where they live.
- On the funnel point bass use the same bush, stump, brush pile, rocks and etc. each feeding period along this route until they have fed up during that feeding period then return home.
- Each one of those ambush points is used during feeding periods and each bass will use the same ones each day until mother nature makes a change or the food supply runs out.

To answer your question: Yes fish the funnels. Locate every one of these ambush spots and fish them with search baits. The Bass are in search of food when on the funnel; so fishing every bush, stump, brush pile, rocks and etc. will get you bit along this route.

I have always called the valley between two points a funnel. You can find them everywhere. I have found bass will travel along the sides of these valleys at a certain depth until they reach either structure they will ambush bait or a flat they will move across feeding. Certain funnels work well at certain times of years. Also I have found the wind will make certain funnels more productive.

This may be totally messed up, but in previous discussions mostly it seemed that the funnel point was defined as some point off a main point that the fish followed to access the main point and feed. Then I remembered a discussion of how the bass would move off into a nearby area of deep water to rest after feeding. What would be a more quickly accessible area of deep water than a notch or gully on the side of a point which the bass could slide off into. So, I'm thinking a notch in the point rather than a ramp leading onto the point.
