What kind of artificial bait would you recommend for slowly fishing along shallow grass edges? Curl tail grubs haven't worked very well for me. Would a light weight marabou jig be a good choice? From what I read, marabou jigs are normally used to fish straight under the boat in deeper water, but are they also used to cast and wind in shallow water?

Maybe add a small spinner arm to a jig or fish a roadrunner? Fish have been deep lately but that's what I'd do if they were shallow and I was casting for them. Couldn't go wrong with a minnow under a bobber either in that scenario.

Drop your favorite crappie jig any where from 2-7 feet below a small bobber. Cast it out and reel it in slow. Try pausing, tipping, slow retrieve. I've used this method a lot and love it. Works well in the spring.

Nickbyrd, while perch fishing, I started catching crappies yesterday morning in shallow water. Caught eight, most small, but keepers. This was a rare occurrence, I seldom catch crappies because the lake I fish in is poor for crappie fishing. Wish I lived close to a good crappy lake. Am too old to make long drives to more distant lakes. Thanks for your reply.

Try a beetle spin, dropped to the bottom, then slow rolled back in. I say beetle spin loosely, cause I am not referring to brand, but putting the suggested spinner (AustinS) on any jig of your choice. (I am old school and putting a spinner on a jig makes it a beetle spin since it was the original!)
