Got into some crappie today, a rare pleasure for me. Brought eight home for the freezer, six scaled and two largest filleted.

Very nice. Glad you got into them. What was the pattern and the bait? I would say to early for them to be moving shallow but this year has been exceedingly weird.

Jagg, I was fishing along a bank with reeds and submerged hydrilla. A light wind was blowing toward the bank. There was a stretch that was probably 200' where I caught them. Depth was probably four to seven feet. It was the only place on the lake where we found them. I was using a 1/32 ounce jig head and plastic cricket that I use to catch bream. We have fished that bank a zillion times and never found crappie there. Was just one of those one-time things, nice while it lasted.

That's about right and a classic jig to get them. Sounds like the wind blew in a bait bloom. Awful nice timing when something like that happens. Congrats! fish

Thanks for the replies Jag and Gitter Done. I plan to fry up a couple of the scaled/whole crappies, plus several fillets, for our supper tonight. Each of us will eat one whole crappie, plus enough fillets, to fill our bread baskets. I put too much salt on the last batch of bream fillets I cooked (last week). I won't be making that mistake again!

Great job and strange depth for this time of year. May i ask what lake and if they had eggs or milt?

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

Teach a man to fish, he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

I Know that's right!!!

The driving force and secret desire of every bass fisherman, is to one day be a crappie fisherman............Could it be that the good Lord just smilies and looks the other way when a fisherman tells a lie?
