I figured this is a whiting...it has the signature goatee. I have never seen one that looks gold and has the camo like pattern. Have I just not caught enough or is this something totally different?

Whiting is an alternate name for kingfish or kingcroakers. The silvery ones are gulf kingfish, the one pictured is a southern kingfish. Obviously not the same as a king mackerel, which is also called a kingfish. You can see the difference in the last picture on this page: http://gcrl.usm.edu/public/fish/southern.kingfish.php

On the East Coast of N.Carolina we called them Virginia Mullet...but here they are Whiting. Good table fare
