Anyone want to share their opinion on how to "fish the tides" ?
I grew on the coast and fished a ton but live in central Texas and spend most of my time hunting for deer and pigs.
Getting back into it.
I undestand fishing is better when the water is moving.
So, in Rockport, Seadrift, etc.. when is ideal?
Right before the high tide?

Just didn't pay much attention to it growing up and we spent so much time on the water catching fish was never a challenge, and I think there were more fish in the bays in the 70s and early 80s when I was living there and fishing.

Last year I went to Alaska and salmon fished Nilchik river on the Cook inlet, man, the tide would come in 20 ft in a few hours and the fish rode it in... it was crazy! Never seen so much tidal change, and it comes on strong at the end! That made it real obvious on the importance of fishing the tide due the role of the incoming tide to bring salmon into the river to spawn.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Usually, the fish depend on the movement of water to bring them food. They won't go hunting it unless they have to. They're just lazy. Well, except for the part where they will go crazy to eat something if the water is moving it right to them.

So, look at the tide movement (NOAA - Texas gulf coast tides ) You can see that about an hour before and an hour after a tide is max low or max high that the water level does not change very fast. The tide is going slack at the peaks. It is moving good in between the high or low peaks. The best time, I think is when the water just gets moving good just after the slack period at the peaks. That is when the fish have had a few hours off and will be ready to eat again.

Works for me. Usually. grin

Depending on where you are fishing along the coast, what your are fishing for (some people target certain fish), i.e. jetties, in the bay, in or next to the marshes, canals etc., you have to work with the tides. For instance the Galveston Jetties....the Gulf sides of the Jetties are best on an incoming tide. The channel side is best on the outgoing tide. If your fishing for flounder near shorelines for instance. I fish it at high tide and work the waters as it goes out. Inside marshes, fish it at high tide along shorelines and watch for bait running the edges.Their's areas in the Bay system I fish the incoming and outgoing. So many variables here. Good Luck

Tides influence fish where it makes a difference. Cuts, passes and places the current runs through will see the biggest influence. Way back in the lakes they don't see much tide current so they don't care.

Watch the baitfish and birds, especially Pelicans. They'll point the way to the gamefish contact points.

Yep. Tides move the bait which makes the fish go where the bait is when it is dislodged. small fish which like the grass is dislodged and reds and trout feed. Shrimp and other crustaceans get moved from shell and other small hiding areas and trout and reds and flounder kill them.
Like said by these experienced anglers you have to go where the water can move the bait around and cast away!

Also remember that you are going to have a big delay in tide times in POC and further delay in Seadrift. It will be weaker and not as high as the tide at the jetties.

Her's a little free clip on tide movement. Also don't forget that there other things that move the water like wind current that the fish can use to feed. The fish don't really care what's moving the water as long as it's moving.

We find in the UK some spots we fish from the boat close in can fish at varying stages of tide and vary greatly withing a mile, once we've worked the spot and find out when the fish feed and what height of tide then usually we've cracked it, some spots only fish for half an hour with some species whereas others will feed for hours, fishing he flood is usually more productive and if you can find features in the water where there's water movement with still patch for bait to wash into you'll usually find the fish...don't forget aswell thought the importance of knowing what the fish will take thumb

We fished Seadrift from Friday afternoon through Monday afternoon.

On Sunday we fished with guide Nathan Beabout and discussed the tides in Seadrift. He explained that the winds make much more of an impact than the tides and we definitely saw that to be the case there.

Hey Mouldy!!! It's been a while since we've seen you here! Good to see you are still checking on things on this side of the pond!

Beabout is good people. For where you were, the winds make more impact than tide. Seadrift is so far removed from the POC jettie that all the tides there are minimized and substantially delayed. There's still a little impact from tides there, but the wind is super important.

Glad ya'll had fun with him and sounds like you learned a lot.
