Fished a lot as a kid with minnows at night and did quite well. Fast forward about 30 years and I am thinking about trying some night fishing again(cooler), but would much rather use jigs. Do you use the same colors as during the day and same depths, or do you go with darker jigs and higher presentation. I know we always used black and blue worms at night for ditch pickles, but that was without the benefit of lights.

Try them all, till you find what they are wanting.

Under bright lights, I have done good on white/shad colored jigs.

Not so bright light,...... black/chart is my #1 nighttime jig color.

try black and red.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

If you are fishing under lights, most any color SHOULD work, if you are fishing dark areas, no lights other than moon or stars, dark colors. Black/chartreuse should be the meal ticket, orange/black, pink/black, should do the trick. BUT, crappie, being the finicky critters they are, might decide to hit whatever you put in front of them or run from it like its got the plague, no matter what you use. I do a lot of night fishing with jigs, both in dark and lighted areas, and those colors i mentioned for dark areas are my "go to's", in lighted areas, the Ernest Paty theory of "whatever i grab when i reach down to the floor of the boat, and impale on my line" works remarkably well.

Thanks for the advise guys. My dad changed his mind and we will hit it at first light rather than at night. I already picked up a floating green light, so will hit it one night in the next few weeks.
Knowing that I'm not crazy trying to use a jig at knight will help a lot.
Knowing that my probability of success is as good as in the day gives me the right mind set to go after it. For me that is a a huge help. Thanks for color thoughts as well. It's been my experience with other fish that night patterns and colors are a lot more constant than day selections. Variables are much more limited.
Thanks again.

My favorite hands down is a black emerald shiner little fry on a gold head. Caught too many crappie, white bass, hybrids and large mouth to count on this bait in the spring and early summer at our boat slips under lights. Natural shad little fry was a close second. Tried lots of different sizes and colors but these two always did the best.

Looked but could not find the gold jig head that you have pictured.
