This time of year and with this heat... would you find sunfish deep or shallow?

I saw some mention of spawning?

Depending on the type of water body you are fishing. On lakes I am getting nice ones by docks in 10 to 15 feet of water. On hill country rivers I am finding them by drop offs in 5 to 10 feet of water or deep pockets. The creeks I fish I am catching nice fish in the deeper pockets of water. thumb

I've been catching some nice ones while crappie fishing in submerged timber, just above the thermocline. I'm still seeing a ton of them up against the bank too but nothing of any size.

well im back out to my nieghborhood lake today as my big boat is getting a new keel guard. Deep pockets are 6 to 9 feet, but there's a large flat that gets about 12 feet, but it's that... flat in probably a 200 yard radius out there.

I accidentally bent one the push on leads that I attached to my small fish finder so I could hook it to a battery, and I don't seem to have a replacement on hand,,,, so I'll be going on memory.

I have yet to chart the entire flat in search of holes, pockets, stumps, laydowns and drops. So far from what I have scouted... it's mostly just flat way out there on the deepest section. I'm really wanting to hunt the big ones, so we'll see what this afternoon brings when the sun gets out from overhead.

Yeah, these are definitely the Dog Days. That being the case, you can normally always find some fish somewhere shallow. However, the active biters this time of year will be on deeper structure. The more remote and less pressured the structure, the better. In rivers, creeks and streams depth is less important, but I still tend to look for deep humps and other structure near shallow structure in the main river channel.
