I had not fly fished for many years. I dug out the rod and some popping bugs the other morning to give it a try.

I caught about 40 or so. Most of them were small pumpkinseeds. Four inches or so.

Any tricks you can share as to how to target bigger bluegills?

Thanks in advance.

I rarely catch bull gill on the surface. Most the big bluegill I catch are close to the bottom and most the time under an indicator. My most productive patterns this time of year are larger scud patterns, San Juan worms and of course wooleybuggers.

Bully Spider works great. Fish deep, near wood.

they can be tough to get this time of the year, most the big fish go deep to escape the heat. They will be more active near dark and at night during full moon phases. you'll catch the biggest fish as fall approaches and they go on a feeding frenzy before winter. Next year during early spring will be another good time to get on them. right now you can find bigger fish shallow in creeks where the can not go deep. That is where I will be targeting them till it cools off some.

Down here in South Central Texas I am catching nice gills in 10 to 15 feet of water holding by docks, and brush piles. Also pulling out some good ones off of creeks fishing the deeper pockets of water. thumb

I am having fun, although I am a bit overwhelmed. Our pond is so big. WTer up to 70 feet. Not many docks. Very little wood. Fish move around depending on what the TVA is doing. Not really experienced with wet flies. Need to learn...
