I have Mercury Optimax 115 attached to Mercury Smart Tow. I am getting a fuel/oil sensor warning, but I just put oil in it Monday. I had this sensor problem 2 years ago and replaced the oil tank. 2 years ago it shut me down to "safe mode" which is idle only. I think think the sensor is a float in the tank which may be stuck? Anyone know how to free the float/sensor OR how long until it shuts me down to safe mode?

Thanks for any help/advice. I have about 2 weeks of vacation left and that is how long all the mechanics say their turn around time is.

Happy fishing!

Can't say for sure on your motor..
Mine has a 2 gallon tank in the boat and a small reservoir on the mtr.. My big tank does not have a sensor built in --only the mtr reservoir..Of which I think is a contact switch -- not a float
my only suggestion is to check the mtr reservoir and make sure it is FULL---
You also say it shows "fuel/oil sensor warning" It could be your fuel filter sensor setting off the warning!!!!
Good luck !!

I would first have a mechanic hook the motor to a computer and see what the actual problem is.
Good chance you will need a new oil tank. Recently had one go bad and after an hour of running and shutting off when sensor started it eventually shut down to idle only.
Where you located?

Good point about the fuel filter sensor. I'll also check the motor reservoir. I appreciate you taking the time to weigh in👍. BIG THANKS!

I had this happen last October to my '04 Optimax at a tournament. Probably got an hour or less (all total) of run time until I was shut down to safe mode, idle only. Was on my way to weigh-in when I got shut down. My sensor is located in the reserve tank on the motor and requires a replacement of the reserve tank assembly.

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. No long runs for me I guess. Dang. Was yours an audible alarm from the engine or did you have "Smart Tow" give you the warning? I haven't had any audibles from the engine yet...

I do find this weird that I had no alarm until right after I added oil Monday.

Don't have Smart Tow, mine was an audible alarm. When I started the motor I could get 2 minutes of run time before the alarm would go off.

You can jump the oil tank reservoir at the connection on the engine to isolate the bad switch with a paper clip. When in "jump" mode the engine will start and run without alarming. This isolates the problem only and does not fix the problem. If you're alarm stops. You unfortunately will have to replace the oil reservoir to fix the problem and refill and purge the oil system. If it were mine, I would put it in the shop for repair and troubleshooting peep

I'm not a mechanic but had the same issue with an opti 150. Since you just added oil check the cap on the oil tank and make sure it is on straight and tight. Next check the tank on the motor, turn your key on and loosen the cap until oil starts to come out then retighten the cap. Be careful not to over-tighten the cap or the threads will pop and you'll have to change the tank. Worth a try.

I had the same issue with my 2011 200 Pro XS. I had the extended warranty and they wouldn't cover it. Called it an expendable item. I wasn't happy. mad

Thanks Bass & More, I probably will ttry to get it to the mechanic, just trying to get the vaction fishing trip done. I wonder if mine is ok since I haven't gotten an audible warning from the engine itself, just a message on the smart tow.
