I am new to fly fishing, i have a 8wt scientific angler combo my in-laws bought for me. It is nice but I would like something a little lighter for panfish so I am building a 4wt for myself and I need suggestions for a reel/backing/line. I don't want anything that will break the bank, but not bottom of the barrel either.

For a 4 weight, the reel will be 99.9% line storage. That .01 will be the story you tell for years:-)
Get something low budget.

Also something that balances your 4wt well. What length Rod are you building? Would give us an idea of the weight reel to get you in the ball park.

A click and pawl reel. Don't really need a fancy drag on a 4 wt IMO. Redington Zero or Orvis Battenkill.

I have a Redington zero 2/3 on my 7' 2wt and the 4/5 on my 8' 4wt. The 2/3 was on a Redington 7 1/2' 2wt and it balanced it fine.

It looks like what I need and in my price range. Aesthetically, I just wish it would come in a silver finish to match my rod. Decisions...

It comes in black and sand. In my honest opinion the sand looks like a piece of sand blaster metal. More silver then sand color. Here is a picture of the sand spool on Cabelas website.

That may work. Here is the rod, not complete yet.

Looks good, but way to fancy for me. I just do simple single color wraps.
