I haven't caught one since moving here in 2008. Would like to find a place to fish for them, but nobody that I know has an idea of where to catch them. Have boat. Will travel up to 3 hours one-way. Any suggestions? All the best, Glenn

What about Gonzales or Wood. TPWD calls Gonzales crappie fishing "excellent".

What about Gonzales or Wood. TPWD calls Gonzales crappie fishing "excellent". Wood Lake is excellent, You might also try Placid and Meadow. Fish are in 15 to 21 feet of water by brush piles, humps, and ledges.
IGFA World Record Rio Grande Cichlid. Lake Dunlap. John 3:16 Sinner's Prayer. God forgive me a sinner. I accept Jesus Christ as my Savior !

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Thank you all very much for the responses. I'll be checking some of these out, starting with Wood and Gonzales, as I've never even heard of them - but now I know where they are after doing a Google search - and they are fairly close.
I have some additional questions, which I hope you all don't mind helping me with. For the longest time, I've been a Virginia resident (US Navy, 18 of 21 years stationed there). So most of my fishing experience has been rivers. I have never done really well on lakes for anything (bass, crappie, bluegill), but I've gotten better with the bass and bluegill since moving to Texas. Still.... my skills on lakes are lacking, and I'm trying to improve.
I have a 20 foot fiberglass bass boat (Triton), and I've found some of these ramps to be difficult to use due to the construction. Yesterday at Bastrop South Shore ramp, I didn't think my 2wd truck was going to get the boat up the ramp for a minute or so. Slick concrete and a steep drop off, and the tires were spinning trying to get the boat trailer yanked up. So... my follow up questions:
1) Do most of these places have decent boat ramps, or do some of them have known issues that you can let me know about so I'm prepared when I get there? I'll go regardless. I just like to know what to expect before I get there so I'm prepared.
2) Heat. Rivers move. Lakes... not so much. Power Plant lakes seem particularly warm. What do you recommend in the heat of summer for deep water fishing - crappie, bass, etc.... in these hot lakes?
3) I'm not a skilled crappie fisherman. Usually, I caught them while bass fishing on smaller lures, and if the bass weren't biting (or I was looking for good eating fish to take home), I broke out my panfish rigs. All I have are ultralight spinning rods and two of those long collapsable poles, with small bobbers and hair jigs. I got into hair jig fishing in FL during my 3 year stint there. My bobbers are either small porcupine quill or "Thill" balsa bobbers. I also have some of the Berkley stuff - Crappie nibbles, Gulp crickets, etc... Do I have the right stuff, or should I rethink my gear before heading out to try for them?
All the best, Glenn

The So called Guadalupe lakes are really just wide rivers constantly flowing. Granger and Waco are real lakes Like Canyon. Dunlap and Placid both have good public ramps under IH 35 and IH 10. Meadow has a private ramp open to the public at River Shade RV park on 123. I launched there once, very steep, very short, and they mean it when the sign says ramp ends here. There is another RV park on the other side of the river with a ramp that I think is also open to the public $5.00 launch fee. I fish straight down with jigs or minnows, no bobber, over brushpiles, laydowns, or structure. Dunlap for me is a tough crappie lake. I have better luck at Placid. Good luck.

We catch crappie on Canyon Lake just about every time we go fishing for them there.

What about Gonzales or Wood. TPWD calls Gonzales crappie fishing "excellent". Not likely to be any good for the next few years... Dam broke earlier this year and all the water ran out other than a small trickle in the river channel. Per TPWD, they have no plans to restock any time soon.
Team wolfs I had to perform. It took a minute to get it all in my mouth and another five to swallow it all.
