I have a neighborhood lake, no one ever fishes it hardly but me.

I've had good luck on the panfish with night crawlers, but I wanted to ask a question..

I've been cutting off about 1/2 inch of the end of a night crawler and hooking it twice on a tiny mosquito hook.

But should I be using MORE of the night crawler? Like half of it?

haha, it's working, I've been catching palm sized blues and redear... i have a box of night crawlers in the fridge I'm going to try getting rid of this afternoon.

I've found an old stump that has a 9 foot deep hole around it, and my fish finder goes nuts when im over it. Tonight im going to tie off to that stump and drop straight in that hole and see if there are any bigger ones down there.

If it is working for you I would continue as you are doing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

However, I use about 1 1/2 to 2 inch segments of the nightcrawler on a #8 gold Aberdeen hook. Any more is a waste, and any less gets the smaller fish. Let us know how your honey hole works out.

ill give a slightly bigger chunk a try this evening when it starts to cool off. I'm pretty fortunate to have these two private ponds in my neighborhood that have incredibly low pressure on them and a small pond boat. I've boated some pretty good bass off them, but sometimes you just want to switch it up.

This hole seems really interesting to me as it's pretty flat all around, but it's also near the creek channel... so this hole is probably 15 feet around, with a big ole sunken tree that leans over about 12 feet to the surface. The flats around the hole is 5 feet deep and the depression leads down to about 9 feet right at the tree base with no other cover nearby, and it's pretty much dead center of the lake.

It looks like Christmas when I put my fish finder over it, and little fish pecking at my big bass lure. So tonight I'm gonna sneak in there and tie off on that tree.

I'd try using a bigger piece for the heck of it. If the small ones keep robbing you then you can always go back to smaller chunks. If you can get a bigger piece deep then it might make a difference

I usually use a 2 to 3 inch piece of worm on a size six hook. I thread the worm all the way to the end the hook shaft leaving the hook exposed. There is usually about an inch to a inch and a half of worm over the hook. hooked

We use half a redworm or dilly on a size 4 Aberdeen, however have caught big gills on setups meant for cats... 2/0 octopus hook with a full nightcrawler. Just like Chuck, we always leave the tip of the worm hanging free, and the hook uncovered. That moving tip draws fish.

Ok well, it was a certainly a peaceful trip!

I didn't catch as many as I thought, total count was 14.

This was the one and only "big".

And this was the smallest fish I think I've ever caught...

In the rest of the batch was one tiny crappie, and one probably 1.5 lb catfish that broke me off at the boats edge.

I was using a #10 aberdeen
