Going to have a chance to do some night topwater bassin in a couple weeks...any suggestions?
Slow, fast, noisy, dark colors??? I'll be using a topwater plug.

For top water at night, throw you a black jitterbug, however, don't limit yourself to only top water. ..Throw a black spinnerbait, a blue fleck power worm or just a straight black 10"worm as well. ..When they hit it, the battle is on!!!

top water baits keep 'em steady so the fish can zero in on them, color not really a factor because you need light to reflect color so everything is going to turn black anyway...my choice is usually a buzzbait... or a jig-n-craw with a rattle... I prefer to deal with single hooks in the dark...

Thanks guys, I'm testing the limits of my topwater creation...the only lure I've fished with since last fall. It has produced in all conditions so far, but have yet to try it at night!

This, plus a "Loon" Whopper Plopper and a black buzzbait.

I believe when we have preconceived notions as to what we are going to catch them on before we hit the lake we are limiting ourselves.

Why don't you just go fishing and if you notice a lot of surface activity, then try a topwater plug?

Instead of asking things like slow, fast, noisy, dark, why don't you go give it a whirl then come on here and tell us how you caught them?

I've said this b4 and I'll say it again. There are no absolutes in bass fishing. The noisy topwater plug you killed them on last week may be completely ignored by the bass tonight.

Let the fish tell you what they want. We don't have the success we could have because we don't let the fish tell us. I am guilty too!!

Arbogast Jitterbug

One of the biggest bass I've ever caught came at night on a Jitterbug. It's a fantastic nighttime bait! I pretty much only use Jitterbug's at night, along with a black popper and a black buzzbait. The Jitterbug gets the nod the majority of the time. It's just an old stand-by that works very well.


Fish can be caught easily at night. They move shallow to feed. Knowing when to attempt to fish at night is the key. I'd start no earlier than 10:00; their eyes need time to adjust to night vision.

Sounds more like he is going night fishing to test his own topwater bait. Doesn't sound like he wants to try another lure. But maybe I missed what his goal is.

I fish topwater at night often! Black is the best option for sure , they supposedly see everything in black and white at night so looking upward the sky's white and your lure contrasts so it's black. Throw them along the shore lines , up and down slips especially where there is light present. Nothing like being in the pitch black and hearing those big ol lips coming up and sucking in the bait. You'll know exactly what I'm talking about when it happens

I'm going tonight on Lewisville. Already got everything rigged so now I'm just waiting for the evening.

On Alan Henry, we catch a LOT of bass on a black buzzbait. Not all hook up, but about 1/2 do. Throw a trailer hook as well. I throw spook type baits and poppers, generally the Yellow Magic at dark. REMEMBER, DO NOT SET THE HOOK UNTIL YOU FEEL THE FISH, otherwise, you might have a lure headed towards you in the middle of the night. A GOOD CAP LIGHT is also a plus, or a halogen hand held light or both. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

So many different presentations can get bit at night in all water columns. Stick with your darker colors and slow it down. I've always liked night fishing, especially the half hour after sundown with a black bull ribbit frog around grass. Too fun.
