What a gorgeous fish! I've seen pictures but they don't even come close to doing this fish justice. From what I got off www, at 10-12" it was just a baby. LOT of fun on ultralight. Thought it was a smallmouth until I got it out of the water. Caught on a small popper, think a Storm Chug Bug or something like that.
Question: Was my surface popper catch sort of typical or was it a fluke? I was fishing from shore in 10-12' water in a small cove. I'd been led to believe that walleye are pretty much a bottom dwelling fish.
Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

True you will catch more near the bottom year round. Especially in clear water. I have caught many eyes and the best lure for is jigs, add a night crawler or minnow. But when searching them out this works well, I have caught more on this color the stick baits work well for walleye for some reason: Red Oahe

Surface Walleye is a fluke. Generally they like deep, cold water with a rocky bottom. Caught lots of Walleye's when I lived up north. Most on jig and minnow or trolling with a spinner rig with a minnow or leech. They also like night crawlers. Like SALLYSUE said, "Dang good to eat!!!".

I was in ND for 3 years and caught a butt load of Walleye. A few were near the surface but most were from using bottom bouncers with a 1-2' lead attached. I don't see bottom bouncers fished much here but I actually have caught a few reds and catfish at Calaveras using the method. I usually fish like that when I'm eating a sandwich or something. I just get around 25-30' and let the wind do the work for me. They sure are. Don't forget the cheeks when cleaning them.

Caught many walleye in Canada with a bottom bouncer, and a worm, minnow, or leech on the hook.

Great job on the eye. I fish for them in Minn every year and there is no tellin where you will catch em. Caught em 60 feet down as well as a 30 incher in 3 ft of water. Swimbaits dropshots live bait. Those guys up there swear by a minnow and jig head but u can catch em alot of different ways. Good job

More often than not that would be a fluke. Super sensitive eyes. Best walleye fishing I've ever done at night is slow trolling crankbaits in fast moving narrows of the St. Lawrence River.
