Below Lake Whitney.

Yesterday the river was down to a perfect level for fishing. About 6pm at the FM 2114 bridge the river began rising again. Around midnight it began dropping again.

This is a fairly typical summer pattern. Lake Whitney has generators, and when the heat is on electric demand goes up, all those air conditioners running wide open. So what I think we'll see is the "bounce" in the river. It depends on how close or far away you are fishing from the dam when you will see the rise and drop. It's hard to pin down just when they start the release, their website is often not accurate on the timing of the release. But I'd guess that to see the rise at the FM 2114 bridge at 6pm they probably started generating around noon.

The river may be still too high, although dropping, at sunrise, and is likely to be rising before sunset. If you are out there wading, always keep an eye on the river level, cause you never know just when it will come up - and you can get yourself in a bind.

J-Moe and I are heading to Whitney early Saturday morning to fish the brazos river tailrace below the dam.

The flow is down to just a trickle @ 200 CFPS but we are anticipating power generation to begin sometime in the afternoon. If history is to be repeated the whitebass and stripers will come up river to feed shortly after the river rises as they generate power. The challenge is dealing with the rising river and staying on the fish.

As much as anything this is a learning adventure with kayaks and fly gear so if anyone would like to join us on the river Saturday morning for some research while we wait for the rise that would be great. We do not plan to float downstream very far (if at all) due to the possibility of high flows and difficult paddling to get back up river once generation begins.

Here�s what I see happening..

We get there to the dam about 7:30AM. Gear up and roam around exploring the riverbed all morning while it is low. Break for lunch, resting in the noon day heat and wait for the horn to signal power generation and the rising river. Get positioned in the river and wait on the whitebass and stripers to begin moving in to feed.. Nothing is written in stone nor is this likely to go exactly as planned but that�s usually the memorable part of the adventure.

Good luck guys. I was there yesterday. Had to leave before dark. For whatever reason yesterday, it sucked. The generation didn't turn on the fish. Be careful out there. They started generating about 2 yesterday. I went
Down to the power plant hole and it was a workout peddling back up in my Outback. Paddling would not have been fun.

I fished Friday and Saturday, will again today. Caught a ton of fish, a lot of sand bass which are unusual this far down river, they were chasing shad which are also unusual this far down. At one time I was standing waist deep in the river and shad began breaking the surface all around me, followed by sand bass. I was right in the middle of a feeding frenzy. Pretty cool.

Caught a few large mouth bass, several channel cat and a few real big bluegills.

Another wonderful Brazos river run is in the books..
