This past winter I was fishing old 154 bridge on fork with a small flutter spoon on 12lb fluoro. I was ready to call Kurt Kelley to witness the new state record till I got it to the surface. Realized it was a 40lb flathead!

I have caught numerous bass over 6 lbs on 8 lb test flouro. With using the same line I caught a 20+ buffalo carp and about a 15 lb flathead. I have since gone away from that light of a line. I now use 20 lb braid tipped with a 12 lb flouro leader on my fairy wands. Fishing with someone who uses 20 lb Big Game on everything including a dropshot and catches a bunch of fish will make you realize that sometimes line size isn't as important. It's more about the fish and how they are positioned in the water column. Water clarity will add to that as well.

A few times I've caught an eight pounder and change on fifteen pound line. I was sweating the entire time. No idea why I didn't have 20 or 25 on there but it won't happen again.

Are you back from your world travels yet?

Haha. No joke. I haven't figured out how to cinch down a knot on line like that without it snapping.

Back in the 70's we had a consistent pattern at the Denton / Henrietta Creek hole where you could sloooow mo a 1/32 ounce flea fly up against one little cut bank with slow current and hook up with 50 lb + gar snagged under their armpit fin. Usually took about 10 minutes before they knew they were hooked but we did beach land a few of them.

4# Berkley Trilene. Caught a 9.25lb large-mouth on a 1/8 oz jig head with a 2" grub. Canyon Lake in Arizona. Had to follow her with the trolling motor.
