I headed back out to my favorite new fishing hole for a sunrise start. I began the morning working my Roadrunner for Bass and in no time landed 3 nice healthy fat large mouth Bass. With 3 nice bass it was time to move onto the sunfish. I tried several baits today and all of them caught big fish. I stopped counting at around 30 fish or so. I got 3 more big green sunfish hybrids today. Smallest was 9.5 inches and did not get weighed. The bigger 2 both weighed exactly 1 pound and both 11 inches long! Below are some of my catches.

I have been catching a lot of these as well. They are considered Sunfish, Green x Redear, not as a hybrid green sunfish in the TPWD record books. Unfortunately, they are not considered in the big fish awards either. I actually own the private water body record for this species.

Why are they not considered for big fish award?

TPWD told me they were not on the list of fish identified in the big fish program when I asked for a big fish award.

If you want to send it in as a hybrid green sunfish then just do it! If they decide to not consider it as that then at least you tried. I've seen people send in applications with random guesses of what they think the fish is and they still give it to them. And people that clearly don't use good measuring and weighing methods but they still award it to them. Go for it! These are very nice quality fish, some of the best pond fish that I've seen in a while.

I would think that they would since the fish falls in the sunfish category. However they may look at it as having to be one of the six types of sunfish listed in the sunfish family. The fish also have to be a native Texas fish. I would call Ron Smith who is the program coordinator with Parks&Wildlife and get his advice which in the end will be the only one that matters. Again SUPER fish and I would defiantly send paper work for the STATE Private Water body record. thumb

I agree, I told Mike the same thing. Sometimes they overlook things.

This was the response I got back when I asked for my Big Fish Award.

No Problem. Not a BFA species.
