Jos and I spent a few hours on the Lake last weekend, between cruisin' around watching wildlife and visiting the arboretum. Bite is still hot, but size is down a bit. Getting bitten off by gar a lot lately, so plan on changing tactics next time out. Would love to land a few of those beasties. Anyway, here's a little taste...

Sounds like you had a great time. As long as they're biting I'm a happy camper. (Although I won't complain when the big ones are biting)

And I have to ask about the bowfin. I've never caught one and sort of want to give it a try. I've read some of the info on your website and can google but nothing beats advice from a local, experienced angler. Any info would be appreciated

Hey Mike, we had a couple of spots on Fork that were terrific for 'fins, however some numbnuts with bows/arrows slaughtered dozens of them and gar. After a year of finding none left, we haven't been back. I know they are in all the "creeks" of east Texas lakes, but most of those are tough to access from shore. We bought and outfitted a NuCanoe Frontier tandem specifically for the purpose of targeting 'fins in an area we spotted a monster last year with a guide friend of ours, but health issues have kept me from putting 'her' on the water yet. If you wanna PM me, I'm happy to give you any advice I can, but never again will I do so on a public forum. There is nothing quite as exciting as fighting a 10lb+ bowfin, and I have no intention of taking a chance of giving location to the butchers again... Hope you understand.

I absolutely understand. I've become less free with information myself until I get to know someone a little better. I will hit you up later for specifics but what tackle do you recommend?

Thanks, guys!

Mike, we use 30lb test Power Pro braid with 24" 15lb test P-Line CX Pro leader for 'fins. 2/0 octopus hooks Carolina rigged(do not use circle hooks), with 4-6" shad cut in thirds(cut off and dispose of tail). Bite is usually extremely tentative. Tiny little taps. Set the hook HARD when rod tip stays bent even slightly... Then HOLD ON! Fight really begins when the fish gets close to shore, and those evil black eyes look up at you! Remember, 'fins have needle sharp teeth that could take off a finger or chunk of hand, so be careful...

This was a few years ago at Fork...
