I'm using Power Pro 65lb line. Flipping 1 1/2 oz into slop, using a Snell Knot with Flipping Hook, 8 wraps. It will hold for a while then at some point it will just break or the knot will slip and there goes my $8 tungsten weight. Any suggestions, maybe a different line or something. Sure I'm doing everything right but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks,

It sounds like two different problems. 65 lb braid is adequate to tow a boat in if its been kept in good condition. I have spools of it that are 5 years old (Suffix 832) and it has never, ever snapped on me. In fact, I can straighten out any hook with the help of a boat cleat. If your line hasn't been stored in a controlled temp location and out of the sunlight, there's your problem.

And some will balk but tie a palomar..... Always with heavy braid or wrap it again for the double palomar if you're concerned. It's strength and simplicity make it a no-brainier on heavy bread.

Heavy tungstens so are too pricey to lose.

Tight lines,

Had a similar problem at falcon with 80-100# braid. Went to a hook with the eye complete welded closed and the Uni-slip knot. No more problems

It might be your tungsten weights beating up the knot. Tungsten is a very hard material and it can cause line to abrade and fail at the knot. See what Aaron Marten's does to his tungsten weights to help stop this from happening.

Palomar is the correct knot to use for that situation. It will not break.

Great points..... Trokar makes that pro model flipping hook that is welded. You really need it or something similar. And you have to have a nice, beveled smooth edge on the tungsten. I've never seen one that's not but seem to hear about it quite a bit.

Even those super cheap Chinese tungsten are highly polished on the insides.

Some of you must not know what a Snell Knot is, there is no knot in the hook eye. The tungsten weight cannot touch the knot.

Jigfish is using the correct knot for heavy tungsten weights.

Bad line, abrasion from low quality weights, or poor knot tying is the issue.

Therein may lie the problem...instead of the weight having a cushion of knot to slide down against, now the weight is pounding the line against the steel shank of the hook, causing abrasion.

Agreed! I always tie a palomar with Sufix 832. I haven't landed a giant fish yet but I have caught bass up to 15 pounds using this knot.

Fouzman will tell you it is the wrong knot to use but its just because he hasn't learned how to tie a knot yet... wink

Holy batman balls what do you call a "giant" then?!?! I'd probably quit fishing if I could catch one at 15lbs!! :-)

Good post as I've been having this issue with 40lb Suffix. Seems like you go go go then get hung up pull a little and just breaks. Now granted I am bad about "not" retying often with braid so maybe that is my problem altogether. And I do tie a palomar knot more times than not.

Everyone knows what a snell knot is....we also know that it is a good choice for braid when done well. Haha. It is a great choice for Flourocarbon line on a EWG hook....sometimes. I like that Snells hide the line from a tungsten and also make a "clicking" sound when it taps the hook. The worst thing about a snell, is it is very hard on the plastics. It makes the shank several times thicker and most plastics tear easily when forced over the knot.

My question? How are you tying a snell on a flipping hook with the bait barbs in the way? I did it once....only once....I don't have the paitience. I just palomar and go. I bend big nasty's with braid and a palomar. I even pull the boat to the hang up. Lol. I have never had a palomar slip. Ever.

I've stopped using the snell and the doubled snell. The doubled snell is better, but can still slip if you don't continuously pull it tight throughout the day

Never had a doubled uni slip, so that's all I use now

The hook will move in the correct direction with the doubled uni on hookset; so don't worry about losing that advantage when you stop using the snell.

When I tie a palomar knot with braid I always tie an overhand knot in the tag end before cutting it off. It won't slip past the overhand knot.

Great point.... Isn't the keeper in your way for the snell? I've seen some with minimalist keepers but even then, it seems like you're overlooking some better options.

On a super violent hook set (which can happen on occasion) I can snap 40 lb braid with a heavy punching rig. It's minimal stretch can also be it's downfall. Go up to 65 lb or even 50 and you'll have marginal changes in line diameter and your issue goes away. You can straighten your hook if your boat doesn't get you there first.

wink
