Hey guys do any of y'all have a problem with your circle hooks hooking back into your baits and closing the gap? Was fishing behind a dam the other day for flatties and had a whole drum on for bait hooked through the eye sockets because of the current, had a nice run on it and picked it up applied pressure and felt his weight but the popped off, got the bait back in and the hook turned around and hooked in the drums forehead, had scrape marks all down his side as well-__- any way to remedy this situation? I'm using eagle claws 7/0 circles so I mean they aren't the smallest of hooks

I don't fish live bait very often but I do use large cut baits and I have had that happen to me before, especially while I was drifting. I picked up a tip on Catfish edge how to properly hook bait and the advice was to always hook the bait at an angle with as much as the hook gap exposed. I've done this method the past couple of years and very rarely do I have one flip back on my hook. As for live bait I've always hooked thru the lower lips or behind the dorsal fin. Is this the first time you encountered this issue or have you always hooked up with good success ratio hooking thru the eyes? It could be it was just one of those unusual things that happen at a bad time.

I hook them through the eyes because it seems to keep them alive a lot longer but the problem is that it's kinda loose sitting there like the hook has wiggle room to move, I had to hook em in the front because of the current to keep them streamlined if I hooked them behind the dorsal they'd die and just pinwheel in the current, I'd figure that if you hooked em through the mouth then they wouldn't be able to breath? Idk I gotta figure something out, hitting it again tonight gunna try through the mouth, and Optimus my spot was right down the road from your house lol

For flat heads in current I've always hook em behind the dorsal fin...keeps em lively and they can point themselves in the right direction in current...make sure it's not too far down so as not to close the gap of the hook...going to have some fouled rigs no matter what.

Try bending the hook to make it more offset, that way the gap isn't so in line with the eye of the hook

Go to an 8 ought hook. It's only one size bigger than what you are using but just bumping up one size larger can make all the difference.
Just one more cast!

Get some team catfish double action 8/0 look at the shape of the hook's closely and compare to your EC..The shape of the TC keeps the bait where it belongs IMO.
If it ain't broke don't fix it...but go ahead and work on it anyway.....
